My G2 has a 10,000 limit on the image counter. After 1.5 years, I've already exceeded it, and now, to keep my raw image archive unique, I always have to rename and prefix all the raw file numbers with a 1. Fortunately, BreezeBrowser does this pretty easily. (I like to keep the raw number in the name permanently, so no matter how a particular image gets renamed, I can trace it back to my raw photo CDs.

What's the limit on your camera? I am personally curious about the Canon digital SLRs -- as my next camera will probably be the Rebel, or maybe it's successor. I think it's a stupid limit. Sure, I can start at 1 again, but then I have image name collisions!

My Sony 717 has the same limit.

However I reset long before it reaches that number. I usually reset after every major outing. I use folders to keep things straight. (I'm sure you don't have over 10,000 pictures in the same folder.) Usually the few that are worth anything I rename to something that indicates the subject, and the others eventually get deleted when I need more room. If I only numbered the good ones, I'd be all the way up to 2 maybe 3.

My Olympus cameras have a format Pmddxxxx - the P is fixed, the m=month (Jan=1, Feb=2, ..., Oct=A, Nov=B, Dec=C), d=day of month, and the xxxx is a continous count of pictures. So for the xxxx to be unique, it gives a total of 9,999. But then the date will be pretty likely to make it unique (I don't think the P turns into a Q, haven't gotten there yet).

I archive raw photos as soon as I take them to CD. The name of the folder there is not likely to be one that lasts.

I index the discs with Whereisit, and then later, if I am working on:

20020101 subject 2221.jpg, and I want the original, I can search for a photo with 2221, and I only want to find one! I don't know if it will have the same name, since I can rename the one on my hard drive, and usually do. The one thing that's then consistent is the image number.

I thought the "P" (year indicator) WAS supposed to turn over as well, but it doesn't seem to. The combination of a 4-digit date + 4-digit sequence number works pretty well; I usually rename with the subject but leave the 8-digit ID number as part of the name.
