Hey...if you are going to be going to Morehead City (on the coast), visit Carteret Community College and stop in at the photo department. Two of the greatest teachers are there...Kathy and Patrick. They know the area well and will tell you all the greatest places to shoot. Tell them Tammi from NY sent you.

I went to college in Raleigh. Lots of stuff to do around there... cow tipping, tractor pulls, spittin, cussin, NASCAR, fishin...

If you have the time to drive from Nashville, you'll find TONS of shooting opportunities in the Smoky Mountains: the Biltmore Estate, Cherokee Indian Reservation, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mount Mitchell, etc. My favorite area was Craggy Gardens just north of Asheville, especially if the rhododendron are in bloom.

All the touristy stuff is great, but you have to get off the beaten track. The two best places in NC are the Outer Banks, esp. Ocracoke (Blackbeard's last battle) and SW NC mountains (Jackson County). Check out //www.ncwaterfalls.com for some great spots to photograph. I know it's quite a drive from Raleigh, but it's worth the trip to go spend a day or two here. Believe me...I lived there for four years and it was absolute heaven on earth. Check out my portfolio at //www.seizethephoto.com/photo/cathy_portfolio/index.html for some ideas. If you're looking for a shorter drive, go to the Outer Banks. Besides the Caribbean and FL Gulf Coast, these beaches are some of the most beautiful you will ever see. Around Cape Hatteras, there is protected federal land and you may even see wild horses running on the beach. Where else can you see that? There are unspoiled dunes and sea oats pretty much everywhere you look, and you'll always be able to find some porpoises jumping in the waves. Make sure you go see the lighthouses too...I think there is seven. I hope this helps!

Rhododendron don't bloom here until sometime in May. The only thing blooming here now are daffodils. They're pretty, but it's definitely still winter :-/

The road to Mount Mitchell is likely closed, too. Pity.

They're actually rebuilding the tower on top, even if it's open. A friend of mine was up there a few weeks back, so I THINK it's open, but there's something going on with the tower.

holy smokes, that's a 9 hour drive! well, 8 plus the hour you lose crossing the timezone.

I'd say that is the low estimate. I would put it at closer to 10 hours.

what can i say...i lived in durham, had a girlfriend in nashville, couldn't afford to fly in an airplane ;-)

1. you drive fast
2. you don't eat
3. you don't pee.

:)

all true ;-)

Wow, sounds like we should have no problem finding things to do! Looks like we are flying into Nashville for two nights then driving somehwere around halfway and finding a cheap place to sleep then onto to Raleigh/Durham airport to drop off the rental car. We'll spend a a couple days in Raleigh and one in Chapel Hill. And the beach is out for this trip. I am pretty excited to hear some great live country music! Working in Music I've always wanted to get to Nashville so were gonna spend an extra night there, so no beach this go around. Although some of the dirve is long and boring from what I am gathering it can't be any more boring than most of the drive on Highway 80 from Oakland to Salt Lake City which is a 12 hour drive. Thanks for all the tips and links, I'll look at them when I have some more time :).

if you're going to be around nashville, you might want to look into visiting the jack daniels distillery over in lynchburg [Pop. 361] ;-)

Ok as a current resident of Durham I am a bit perplexed no one has suggested shooting Duke's campus. Oh sure there has been some quick mentions, but there are the Duke Gardens (huge and tons of great shots) the campus (West campus is called Gothic Wonderland) Inside and outside of the Duke Chapel. They also have a primate center and a forest (tons of acreage.) I mention this because if you are in Chapel Hill you will be 12 minutes away and that makes for a much better slip out during the day trip for your in-laws rather than running from them 4 hours away :)
