question

there has got to be an easier way to resize a photo

i shoot in raw so my file sizes are pretty big

i need to resize them to 8.5 by 11 and 4 by 6 to go print them

is there an easy way to do this in photoshop without warping them and then cropping down and down till you get the right proportions?

i know im being stupid about this and its probably really easy, but i can't find an easy way to do this

help!

The way I resize photos is go to Image and then image size. I'm not sure if that's what your talking about though, I don't have that much photoshop experience.

See the tutorial Judi posted however the fact that one is a 1:1.3 ratio and the other is a 1:1.5 ratio you will always have to do some cropping.

Yeah ... 8 X 10 and 4 X 5 are both 1.25:1 and are a LOT closer to the 1.3:1 that comes out of your camera so less cropping is necessary ... THEN resize them from the 1.25:1 crop.

These ratios are much easier to get frames for too.

11 X 14 is popular too and it 1.272:1 ... so half way between.

Just use the rectangular marquee tool (to crop) in Fixed Aspect Ratio style to get your aspect (proportions). You can either enter the 8 and 10 or 1.25 and 1 ... or whatever ... It will all work out to the correct ratio crop rectangle ... then just make it the size you want and move it around ... it will always maintain the ratio you have entered.

the 20d shoots a frame ratio of 1.5 : 1. not 1.3 : 1 i believe.

fullframe suits an 8x12" print... 12/8=1.5

4x6" prints are a 1.5/1 ratio and will work straight from the camera, no cropping needed. But as mentioned, for an 8.5x11 print you need to do some cropping. 8x10's (1.25/1 ratio) are more standard and thus much easier to find frames for (and printers) so I would go with that size unless you absolutely need 8.5x11" and are willing to hunt down a printer that will print that size. Good luck.

8.5x11" will need to be cropped to a 1.29 : 1 ratio in order to get minimal distortion.

it's not 100% perfect because it's a rounded figure. 1.294117647 : 1 to be exact - but i doubt the text field will allow more the two decimal places...
