You may not:

use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer̢۪s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop)

What does this mean exactly?

If I clone out a small tree and a few other distractions in the background of an image, is that legal?

Cloning out small distractions is legal, but the dilemma comes when one asks "what is considered a small distraction?" and that is left up to the SC. If you change or remove "major elements" of the image, then it will result in a disqualification.

It is a little bit foggy no matter which way you look at it because it varies with each separate instance. But that is the best example I can give.

you can submit it to SC and ask them. it will give you an idea but it will not be an official ruling. (some have been burned on this before)

But the statement of the older rules said you could not remove major elements (that in its self is rather ambiguous). It now only says you cannot remove things that "would change the viewers typical description of the image". I guess I am having trouble with that part. What exactly does that mean? I do not think removing the tree changes the viewers typical description. With it gone it does not change the focus of the image from the subject. I just find it distracting.

How would I submit an image to the Site Council for review?

Next to the image (when you look at NOW) on the left, there should be a box that says submit your image for review if one of the following is relevant: 1. You will not be available to submit if asked... blah blah 2. and 3.
Under that, there is a link so you can submit a photograph for review :)

Hope that helps :)

If you want a review before a challenge starts, do the following:
- Prepare your entry
- prepare a 640-px version of your original
Submit the entry, and submit a "beneral inquiry" ticket. Attach the resized original and note what you're questioning
We'll look at the submission and the resized original and let you know. Please do allow 48 hours for this kind of review, because several SC members must review it and we must come to consensus.

Ok thanks. I want to use the image in the Feb. Free Study so hopefully the Site Council can come to a consensus in time for me to submit another image if they feel this one is in violation. Thanks again!

Here is a good example of what you can do in the new Advanced Editing rules as far as cloning goes. It is from Nuzzer's yellow ribbon in Song Titles, so it was also validated.

But if your in doubt the best thing is to do what Kirbic said. Hope this helps :)

Great example, thanks for the post! I think I will be ok, but I submitted to the Site Council and await their verdict. :-)
