I owned a 580EX and today purchased a 430EX to use as a slave. I set them both up to channel 1 and turned them both on. Set my master (580) on the camera to master and the 430 to slave. Problem is when the master is set to master, as opposed to just on, it wont fire the flash.

Any ideas?

Are both flashes not firing, because you can have the master turned off so that only the slave will fire. Make sure that you have fresh batteries in both flashes.

press the "zoom" button four times on the 580, it should blink on the little image of the flash, turn it to on, using hte dial

JulieG- The batteries in the master were not fresh enough it appears cause once I changed them it fired right up. Thank you all for the quick responses!

Yeah. I use 580 EXs for my lighting, but sometimes I find it really frustrating that they don't fire unless the batteries are really fresh. I did switch to regargeables which made them a bit more reliable than using non rechargeables. Glad you figured it out.
