Would I buy L-glass if I had the means to? Probably. But, I am not a full time professional. Photography is a hobby I sometimes make money at. At the time that I bought my 50D, if I had really wanted to I could have possibly bought an L-wide angle lens. But, I didn't. I went with the Tamron, and I'm thrilled with it. I have rented L-glass, and I loved it. The construction of the Tamron is not as good as the L-lenses I've tried out, but I am pleased as punch with the end results and think that it is comparable to L-glass. Unfortunately, *I* screwed up the DOF in a picture that would have been a true test of my theory - the Tamron wide open. But, that was a Ragamuffin issue, not a Tamron issue.
And I will also say, the picture that I scewed up the DOF on - isn't that bad, and still completely kicks the butt of say my Canon 28-135 lens.
