Hi All
Ok if you dont know i live in Ireland, just north of Dublin. Myself and Mrs Brookied with Little Brookied maybe looking to move to San Francisco or a close area.
We spent a few days there last year and were bowled over. So after some talks we want to look into jobs and housing and a possible move.
What would i expect to get for $500,000 house wise? we are looking for 3 beds minimum, what areas should i be looking at, nice versus bad.
One thing Mrs Brookied is worried about is making new friends. are there any heads herre that might be willing to step up to the plate and meet a fellow DPC'er and hand hold for a while ;-)
I know its a lot to ask but i am really looking for pointers and not the full facts.
We are looking and Real Estate agents in the area and also looking at applying for green cards etc..
As i works for Brother international in Ireland I was looking at a possible job move. has anybody done this before?
Cheers for any help
PS you can get me on google talk most days if you want to ask me anything.

$500,000 will not buy a 3 bedroom house in San Francisco. Not even a 2 bedroom actually. You could get a two bedroom condo for about $600,000 with some serious looking but that could take a long time and you'll spend a lot to make it livable. Your best bet would be one of the outer Bay Area communities. Concord is getting pricier but you can still find a house every now and again in that general price range. It will probably be around 1100 sq ft (102 sq m) on a postage stamp lot though. If you don't mind being further away from San Francisco places like Dixon (between San Francisco and Sacramento) and Petaluma (North of San Francisco) have much cheaper housing. Basically anything an hour away from the city will be more reasonable.
EDIT: Good places vs. bad... There are pockets of nice neighborhoods even in cities that are considered less than or undesirable. Oakland for example has many outstanding neighborhoods and some really objectionable ghettos. Your real estate agent will steer you clear of those neighborhoods.
You can do some browsing for houses on your own. There are many online listing sites.
MLS Listings is good for the Peninsula and South Bay areas. Covers a little of the East Bay. Does not cover the North Bay at all.
Great Homes covers the North Bay.

So true. Sometimes 20-30 miles outside the city you might find something more reasonable.
Since San Francisco surrounded by water except for the south and basically housing has no where else to expand you are pretty much out of luck to find something really reasonable. |

cheers guys,
While SF is the plan we are looking outside in surrounding areas and maybe commute or get a home work job of some kind.
its all a long way of at present but i thought i might as weel get some advice from you guys here.
500,000k is a minimum more push 750,000 - 800,000 when we sell the house in Ireland but i want to start at 500 and see what we get and how far out we might need to go in order to get a nice place.
