I'm getting a Canon 20D (Yaaaaay !)and need to find some lenses for it, my requirements for Uni are just to cover 35-200mm. Now I've bought the camera and textbooks I'm pretty close to broke so I'm looking for cheap lenses that don't totally suck. So far I'm considering the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III but in all honesty I haven't got a clue so I'd be grateful for any advice.
Also what's the difference between Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II ? |

The II is the newer version of the lens. That's about it. They are both still very entry level lenses, and while they aren't totally bad, they aren't really all that good either. What kind of budget are you looking at? I'm sure some people around here can suggest a great combo for you.

| Thanks SamDoe1, my budget is really tight, I'm trying to keep it around US$400 but if I need to I can probably get a student loan to bump that up a bit but basically keep it cheap. I'll aim for an L glass next year :) |

have a look here. great database.

do you have a budget? and what do you want to shoot?
for example, the 18-55 kind of zoom is pretty good for most of your need - until you want to shoot wildlife, or low light, or portrait.
If you're not sure, don't buy any right now, go with a cheap 18-55, and as you play with it you'll discover what you lack (an you'll be able to save in the meantime).

50 mm 1.4
If you ever want to use the lenses on a Canon film camera buy EF not EF-S.

the first 2 lenses i used w/ my 20D and did me well for quite some time were the 18-55mm kit lens and the Sigma 70-300mm/4-5.6 APO DG.
there not "best" quality. but they definitly do the job and i got some shots i was really happy with. |

OK -I have a Nikon but I second this recommendation. The 50mm 1.4 is simply unbeatable for the price and if it's anything like mind, it will be super sharp and have great bokeh.
