ive startd to do Alevel photography and i was wondering if some1 cud help me answer this q:

how and why does the compostion work in a photo that breaks the rule of thirds?

The answer to your question is that the rule the thirds is more a guide rather than a rule. The rule of thirds is used to give your pictures a dynamic feel, whereas a symmetric composition is used to give your pictures more of a static feeling.

This means that if you are for instant photographing an animal then you will probably want a dynamic composition and therefore use the rule the thirds, however if you are photographing an animal in a sentry position you will probably want a symmetric (Central) composition to show that the picture is intended to convey a static image.

Likewise for portraits you tend to want a static composition, and therefore would not think to frame a portrait using the rule of thirds.

I hope that this helps you.

the above is very true

a guide line for composition
in art all rules are meant to be broken.
you will know when it doesn't work if you have the eye...
