No, I would say that my logic is right on track, thank you Paul :)

As you can imagine, this exact discussion has come up quite a bit around here in the past week. Quite a few people have asked me whether we'd go back, and my answer for now is "no."

You're right, and you're echoing the opinion of a lot of people who say that this particular restaurant will indeed be spotless if and when it reopens.

The key to this argument is that they still don't know what the cause is. If they could tell me "it was this Coke machine, and we have destroyed it," or it was Billy Bob Smoot who didn't wash his hands, and we have executed him, or whatever, then I probably would go back. But without knowing the exact cause, how can I feel confident that they have nabbed it?

In short, I'm not about to take my precious 5-year-old girl to this place until I know why this happened, and that it ain't gonna happen again!

EDIT -just looked - at least 10 articles from all over covering the issue

PS, Paul... I'm glad we didn't place any bets on the Giants/Steelers game yesterday. Eeep. :)

PSS -- Thanks for all the links, everyone... I'm enjoying reading about it elsewhere.

the crazyiest thing in my mind - is this stuff is all around at tons of restaurants - and the sicknesses just dont get publicized or reported.

or there arent enough cases to push the issue - or find a source.

not really any different than the stuff you buy the grocery store either.

the fact it hit home ( for you ) at a place you eat is a bit more dramatic - i try not to think about much though.

The first two points are probably not true; the public health authorities really try and get and analyze stats on disease incidence. But it's all based on reported cases, and consistent under-reporting occurs for a variety of reasons (mis-/undiagnosed cases, bureaucratic laziness; privacy/confidentiality concerns, etc.).

Your last point is probably true, and likely is the origin of the warning I just heard broadcast to avoid eating raw green onions altogether.

alan -- I'm staring into my crystal ball ... I see a big new shiny yacht in the driveway ... of Bill Cowher's cardiologist.
