I have never posted to the forums before. I am very new to this. A total amateur! I need some opinions on my work. I'll be the first to admit it's probably not very good. I want to learn how to make my photos better. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me. Thanks! |

You've got a very expressive portfolio so far. I'm still trying to figure out the lighting thing myself, but I think that lighting is your biggest issue. You have the creativity to do well here with a bit of post processing work. :)
One of your shots (Second Attempt) has some pretty good advice that I really can't do much to expound on except to say that I have learned that the direct flash from the built in on my D80 is not my friend. :) You need to look at other sources of light, be they natural (like in Fourth Attempt which looks pretty good.) or artificial. Since picking up the camera again, I have found myself analyzing the light and the way it plays on surfaces just about everywhere I go. I bought a cheap 500 watt halogen work light for indoor work, (I used it exclusively in my B&W portrait entry) and plan to try my hand with reflectors and diffusers when I get the time, energy, motivation and money. :) If I ever get it figured out to a reasonable degree, I hope to buy an actual light kit for portrait work.
Hope this helps, and I look forward to seeing what advice some of the experienced portrait gurus here give. (Oh, one last thing. . . Keep shooting and welcome to DPC!) :) |
