I picked up a new softbox from Amvona a few days ago and here are the first results. Pretty much right out of the camera except for a minor bit of brightness and contrast adjustment and cropping to 8x10.
I positioned the light about 6 feet from my daughter, slightly off to one side. I had her stand about 3 feet from the background. I used my 70-300 lens and shot from about 10 feet back.
I think tomorrow, I will rearrange the living room to get a bit more space to set things up a bit better.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention....These looked good on my uncalibrated laptop screen, so on a calibrated monitor they may look horrible :-)
Comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Round two is the most pleasing from both a lighting and posing stand point.

I'm with fotomann on the second shot, best pose out of the 3. Are these hot lights? Seems a bit warm to me. I would shoot raw if you're not already to easily adjust the color temperature afterwards, or do a custom white balance after the lights are all set up. Very nice shots though, keep up the good work. |

Thanks Leroy and Marc for the comments and suggestions, they are very much appreciated. I'm just getting started in portrait photography and have lots to learn...
Yes I'm using Tungsten lights. I thought I had setup the white balance correctly, but it never fails, I always seem to mess up a bit somewhere. I played a bit more today and got a few better shots, but the WB was still off. Then I was goofing around after my daughter went to bed and managed to get the WB perfect. Now I just have to talk her into playing model for me again tomorrow and I'll get some better pictures (hopefully!).
Oh and I'm still using my horribly un-color corrected laptop. I hope to see a Huey or similar device in my future soon.
All of the pictures so far are in my Picasa gallery //tinyurl.com/2vl5sh
