I vote we definitely incorporate that last suggestion from Brad.

I am still at a loss as to what button one might push for a comment like ...

"?????"

I have NO idea what that comment means ... LOL

Pretty sad when you can't even mark as helpful the comments you make on your own images. Typically replies, but there should be a check box - "My comment was helpful"

I commented on your Death entry. And you didn't even mark it helpful, you b4$tard!

(made you look)

You *did* make me look, even though I know, *I KNOW*, that I have but one comment not marked as helpful and I know, *I KNOW*, it wasn't yours.

*hums Wonder Woman theme* ...

Jutilda beat ya by a mile!! 2,836 unhelpful comments. (She's a commenting anomaly though.)

Let's get real about the meaning of the number of 'unhelpful' comments...

Here are some numbers to help us put it into perspective...

Stats listed:
Comments made - comments marked helpful - # marked NOT helpful - Percent marked helpful

Users...

Posthumous:
6070, 4970, 1100, 81.9%
Jutilda:
25175, 22332, 2843, 88.7%
KarenNfld:
7760, 6375, 1385, 82.2%
Stdavidson:
2923, 2336, 587, 79.9%
Sherpet (known for making lots of comments):
16428, 14021, 2407, 85.3%

Others whose comments would normally be considered 'good'...

AlenFreed (Has voted more than anyone else at DPC):
3392, 1890, 1502, 55.7%
scalvert:
1539, 1188, 351, 77.2%
kirbic:
403, 342, 61, 84.9%
dsidwell (new on SC but long time DPCer well known for his photography):
5171, 4065, 1106, 78.6%
jmsetzler (long known for his photography and fairmness judging others):
7938, 3596, 4342, 45.3%

What do these statistics tell us? First off, the more important measure of a person's commenting is the percentage marked 'helpful' moreso than the just the total number of comments left unchecked. That explains why Jutilda has more comments left unchecked than anyone else. She simply has made more comments than anyone else in my small sample.

What is meaningful about Jutilda is that she has the highest percentage of comments marked helpful of anyone I listed. Based on popularity alone we'd have to conclude that Jutilda is the 'best' commenter of the group listed. However, she has commented more than anyone else. It seems perfectly logical that she would also have the most comments left unmarked if the "This comment was helpful' box is meaningless.

You will notice that most of the photographers you'd normally expect to be among the best commenters on the site and have the highest 'helpful' comment percentages, in fact, do NOT! For the most part their percentages are much less. (I suspect it has more to do with their longevity on the site than it does to any actual meaning of the checkbox itself)

Conclusion:
The "This comment was helpful" checkbox is meaningless, does nothing more than generate complaints by people who feel their comments are unappreciated by others as certainly is the case in this discussion, it serves no useful purpose and therefore should be removed from the system.

During a challenge, it is frustrating to take the time to leave a detailed comment, suggestions on how to improve it and never get marked as helpful. Makes one wonder why bother, and/or if it was even read.

Such as:

Comment:
At 440x260 pixels, this image is a bit on the small side. making use you 640 pixels on the longest side will help an image a lot in a challenge.
The site has some great tutorials on how to prepare a shot for submission in the Forum drop-downs under Tutorials. if you need further help, please PM me now or after the challenge and I can direct you to some great sources of help.
You did meet the challenge and gave you a 4 for effort.

As a suggestion, try taking the image into Photoshop (assuming you have it), and in the Hue/Saturation adjustments, take the yellow channel hue and saturation to the right a little (maybe 10 pts) and bring the lightness down a bit (10-20 pts) to give the yellows more of a darker, richer green look, and bring the red saturation up just a little.

And:

Comment:
This shot had a lot of potential but fell short in this unbelievable challenge and offer the following things that needed improvement: (and trust me, I know night shots aren't easy)
1)The horizon is off a little (needs CCW rotation)
2) Focus/clarity is on the soft side. Perhaps camera movement?
3) Brightness and / or contrast need to be increased.
4) Main subject is dead-center. A more interesting composition would have it slightly off to one side.
5) Noise level (or image compression) in the sky. Neat image may be of use here.

I sincerely hope these help. Still voted this a ((5))

Just a few of the many, many I have made that either weren't read or constructive enough to be considered helpful.

I also vote to can this functionality. Many people render it meaningless and it just uses unnecessary bandwidth and takes away from users who just want to vote that bit quicker (won't get into that one again...) It would be interesting to analyse what % of bandwidth is used for these updates.

I am over a third of the way there.

Cross your fingers, maybe another membership year I can catch up.

Negligible. I wouldn't consider it a reason to discuss removing it.
