I think he has settled for a 3 mega pixel with good optical zoom.
I have told him about the memory, batteries and charger.

Also: remember to save some of the budget for rechargeable batteries, usually not included, and a decent size compact flash card. The CF cards are cheaper than the other meda. We got a San disk 256 MB card for about $29 after rebates. |

Yeah, it was 7-something AM and I'm on under 4 hours sleep/night for two days ... I didn't go back to the bottom (top) of the thread this time ... just remembered about a camera for his son ...
... and kids are so precocious these days.
3MP with zoom sounds like a good place to start.

I work in a camera shop and my favorite point and shoot digital is the canon A70. Best bang for the buck. 3 megs, 3xoptical and pretty easy to use, plus it allows you to shoot aperture or shutter priority as well as manual as well as auto. It also has an easier learning curve than most. And priced around$290. That is probably our best seller right now. |

What Canon software comes with this?
I hope it is better than what came with my Canon EOS 10D :)
He likes the price on the Canon Powershot A80 that Pitsaman sent us.
I gave him all the info and he is going to make the decision I find it is better that way.
Thanks everyone for all the help :)

"What is the XD Picture Card?"
xD Picture Card is a storage format like Compact Flash or Memory Stick. It is not quite as propriatary as Memory Stick because it is used by two camera makers, Olympus and Fuji. It's advantages are it's small size (about the size of a US dime), relatively fast speeds for both read/write and upload to computer, and low power consumption. It is all solid state, no moving parts like a microdrive. So far the largest capacity available is 512MB. Future projections have 1 gig available in 2004, and up to 8 gigs possible after that. Up until now all xD cards were made by Toshiba. This may have held back it's wider adoption because Toshiba owns Secure Digital cards, a competing format. Recently SanDisk has been licensed to make and distribute xD cards under the Fuji, Olympus and SanDisk brands so maybe it will grow. I like it because it seemed faster in my first digicam (Fuji 3800) than the compact flash in my current one (Canon Pro 90). But then again it may go the way of Beta for video casettes. |
