i'm not sure if that's the right term, but i've noticed that when you change your signature, it doesn't change the OLD posts you made with your old signature.

so changing your signature only takes effect for the posts you make after your signature changes.

seems an odd thing to do ... especially since most php forums rely on a volatile signature field which is read and renewed constantly.

if you older signature contains a link that no longer functions, or mentions a WPL team you're no longer in ... basically outdated information ... then that information is still visible if the older threads are viewed or re-newed.

just a suggestion ... can you make the forums look for the signature field when it generates pages?

Your suggestion would take longer to parse than having the signature stored with the message.

I somewhat agree with you about it, but with a forums section as big as DPC's efficiency does have to be considered.

On the flipside of the coin, your suggestion takes less storage space.

right! i'm aware that it would require double the number of queries to the database ... upping the time it takes to parse.

but it's fairly standard in other forums.

however, if dpc decides that this way is the most efficient, who am i to argue! :)

The hard part would be stripping the existing sigs from the old messages. :-)

Makes a lot more sense to me the way it is. Also keeps folks from putting crap in their signatures, then changing it and saying "I dunno what yer talkin about!"
