I don't know how or why but I do know the ol' bait-and-switch. People unexpectedly die when you're busy watching someone else you think is going to die instead - it's true in real life too. And he's been wanting to retire and isn't an integral part of any story line anymore since they're clueing up all of his relationships.

I thought the exact same thing as that! You pretty much summed up what was in my head lol :)

Hmm, not sure how...but w/the riff between the actors portraying Burke and George...maybe something odd will happen there? Nah! McSteamy is without...but he's too cute to die...what about that spacey Casey chick? She needs to go away...lol. Ok, I got nothin'. Oh....oh....wait....Meredith's mom??? Hmmm...AND she could become the chief's new love interest....huh, huh?

Okay, I totally lost it every time a commercial came on... I wanted to just Tivo and watch it later sooooooooooo badly because I was screaming at the stupid TV!! LOL But, alas, I was hooked and sitting on the edge of my stupid chair...
