Which would you choose? Looking for a Sigma Lens that will work with the Nikon 50.
10-20 F4 - 5.6 EX DC HSM Wide Angle Zoom lens
Seems like a slow lens :-(
17-35 F2.8 - 4 EX DG Aspherical HSM Wide Angle Zoom
I feel like it should be wider.
Not sure, my main use will be for getting group photos. With the lens I have now, I have to move so far away to get a group photo.
Thank you |

Two very different animals. The 17-35 @ 17mm will give you about a 26mm equivalent FoV, about 70° horizontally (landscape orientation of course). The 10-20 @ 10mm gives you a 15mm equivalent, with about 100° of horizontal coverage. In other words, if you stood in the corner of a room and shot toward the center, you'd see all four walls!
The 17mm lens is already pretty wide. Keep in mind that people photographed at the edges of the frame get stretched horizontally with a WA lens. The wider the lens, the greater the effect. It's extremely unflattering :-P
I think you're better off with the 17-35mm, even though you don't need a fast lens for this type of work (you'll need to stop down for DoF in any case). |

My question is: Why only Sigma?

The Tokina 12-24mm has a great reputation. It's well reviewed and I happen to like many of the images that I looked at when I was shopping around for a WA lens. I tested it and thought it was fine but I liked the Nikon 12-24mm f4's build much better.
The Nikon 12-24mm f4 is better made and it should be for the price but that Tokina is great. Almost neck and neck.

They do, they also make some real stinkers and some that are in between. Same thing with almost all lens manufacturers.
As pawdrix mentioned, the Tokina 12-24 is a very good lens.
Tamron makes a couple of nice lenses in the range you're considering, a 28-75 f 2.8 and a 17-50 f2.8. They also make an 11-18mm zoom, but I haven't heard nice things about it

I like good lenses. Sigma makes some, but so do a lot of other manufacturers. Why not consider other brands as well?
Taken with my Sigma 12-24:

I went with the Sigma 10- 22mm and have been loving it. It seems that all my recent challenge pictures were taken with it.
This is my highest scoring image with my D80 and made the Top Ten.
My second highest score was also with this lens:
and I have two pending entries also taken with it. I like the extra 2mm (vs the Nikon 12- 24mm) and also about half the price. But the other choices also seem to be good lenses. The differences appear to be small so just pick one and get shooting with it! They are lots of fun. One more shot:
