Hi,

I finally did a photoshoot for a family and had some prints done by Costo. However, I was disappointed because some of the enlargements had cropped off some of the tops of the heads, or features on the sides of the photo. They were ok in the 4x6 size but 5x7 or 8x10 it didn't work. I couldn't use the edit feature when I tried to do it from their online site, to correct the 'cropping'. Do they have some preset fields or what? Could I take them to someother place and have them correct it?

My question is, is there a way to avoid this, or is this typical of enlarging?? I was able to print some out on my printer using 8 x 11.5 photo paper and they came out fine.

I need to have the final photos done tomorrow, so any ideas/comments will be appreciated! What would I do without DPChallenge???

Thanks folks!

Most Costco locations have the ability to print 8x12 which would not crop your images.

You need to crop your photos to the proper aspect ratio before printing. You camera takes pictures in the ratio of 2x3. If you try to print that in an 8x10 either the top, bottom, or both will be cut off. Use your photo editing program to crop to a 4x5 ratio if you want to print an 8x10.

Maybe you should try a better website printer such as Shutterfly - You can set up a free account - You normally get free prints on signing up and the crop tool is so easy and instant so you can see the result of what the final print will look like - The printing is also very good and reasonable.

when i've done costco prints i've back filled //
that is, increased the image to the next size & filled the (new) white border with a gradient
if you just place a line around the image they will ignore that but if you FILL it seems to take (also looks like a double matte once it is matted ;)

Highly recommend //www.adoramapix.com in the future, as they have a "crop tool" as part of their process, such that you can adjust the position of the crop after picking the print size.

Okay look at this qoute from you..... lol 8x10 versus 8x11.5..... theres an entire 1.5 inch difference! Yeah 8x12 will work better but ull have a .5 inch white border. You can edit 2 .25 inch black borders in to fill the void or get a custom frame and crop to fit.

Or you can crop your photos to the aspect raio you need before sending them and control what gets cropped out.

Thanks for all the advice. I can cut the page to fit after printing out. Certainly I will adjust the ratio..that is what I wanted to know.

Glad to see it can all be fixed up!

Some printing sites, such as the Kodak Gallery (nee Ofoto) have the option to turn off the "zoom and trim" feature, which will fit your entire image onto the chosen paper size rather than cropping, leaving white borders where your original aspect ratio doesn't fit.
