I can't read my EXIF info in Irfanview. It tells me to download plug-ins and when I do I still can't read my EXIF stuff. Arrgghh!!

Did you actually install the plugins? Or just download them? They do work, I promise :)

Irfanview is the most excellent free to non commercial users graphic viewer/organizer/converter in the world for sure. I have never had a problem seeing exifs or opening pix in even the most rare formats.

Yeah...I've got it. But it doesn't list them like I expected.
Max Aperture Value: is that actually the aperture?
Exposure Time: shutter speed?
ISO Speed Ratings? ISO?

Thanks to everyone for your patience. :)

The way they are listed does take a bit of getting used to...

Max Apreture Value is actually the largest available aperture value, should be 2.8 if using an f/2.8 lens, for instance, regardless of where the aperture is actually set. Here's some examp0le EXIF:

Make - Canon
Model - Canon EOS 5D..............Camera used
Orientation - Top left.............Image orientation (which way is up?)
XResolution - 240.00
YResolution - 240.00
ResolutionUnit - Inch
Software - Adobe Photoshop CS2 Windows..............Editing Software
DateTime - 2006:03:24 20:47:49..............Date last modified
ExifOffset - 208
ExposureTime - 1/60 seconds..............Shutter speed
FNumber - 16..............Aperutre setting
ExposureProgram - Aperture priority..............Shooting mode (Av)
ISOSpeedRatings - 100..............ISO Setting
ExifVersion - 0221
DateTimeOriginal - 2006:03:17 15:52:12..............Date & time taken
DateTimeDigitized - 2006:03:17 15:52:12..............Should match above
ShutterSpeedValue - 1/60 seconds..............Shutter speed again
ApertureValue - F 16.00..............Aperture again
MaxApertureValue - F 2.83..............Max aperture on lens used
MeteringMode - Multi-segment..............Metering mode used
Flash - Not fired, compulsory flash mode
FocalLength - 15 mm..............Focal length of lens used
ColorSpace - sRGB..............Color space setting in camera
ExifImageWidth - 2589..............Image width in px
ExifImageHeight - 3884.............Image height in px
FocalPlaneXResolution - 3086.93.............resolution, px/inch on sensor
FocalPlaneYResolution - 3091.30.............Should be roughly same as above
FocalPlaneResolutionUnit - Inch
CustomRendered - Normal process
ExposureMode - Auto
White Balance - Auto.............Camera White Balance Setting
SceneCaptureType - Standard

Thumbnail: - .............Following all refer to the small embedded JPEG thumbnail
Compression - 6 (JPG)
XResolution - 72
YResolution - 72
ResolutionUnit - Inch
JpegIFOffset - 710
JpegIFByteCount - 6059

Note that the names of the fields depend on the software used. Some software can read fields that other software will miss. For instance, in Photoshop, some of the above information is so cryptically presneted it's almost useless, while I can see other useful information like the name of the lens used, the serial number of my camera, and even the firmware version I have installed in the camera.

Shutter time and shutter speed value may not always match -- one is the speed setting and the other is the actual exposure time.

For example, you can have the shutter speed set to 1/500 second, and the actual exposure may be 1/503 second.

Thanks! I'm starting to catch on to all the basics! I've been on my couch for 2 days straight (there's a blizzard and all...)but at least I've been learning.

This is the start of something beautiful.
