Hey all, I'm hoping to get out to the race track to get some photos of cars at a drift meet. I was wondering if anyone has any tips for me?
Basically I get access to various areas on the track, so I get reasonably close to the cars in corners. Oh, and for those of you who haven't heard of drifting, heres an example:

The only zoom I have is the el cheapo canon 75-300, so that'll have to do.
Help please :D

At dirt tracks, watch out for clods of dirt. Last time I went to the Outlaws Sprint Car race, I got pelted by clods of clay... that said. Take a mono-pod at a minimum, a fast lens and VR if you have it (especially if shooting at night under the track lights), and be prepared to crank up the ISO to keep the shutter speeds up. Experiment with different angles, and make sure to take some shots where you pan the car movement, it is real effective if the car is in focus and the background is a blur and vice-versa. Shots with the cars (or bikes) coming at your rounding a corner, filling the frame, look pretty cool too. Good luck. |

Get as close to the turns as possible, this gives you the advantage of smoke and wheels turned, this gives a feeling of "action" in your shots. Try to focus on the front bumper of the car (or slightly in front of) when they are in motion, the shots will come to you. Use a fairly slow shutter speed for some of your shots, drifting is high action, low speed. Last but not least, SQUAT! Kneel, whatever gets you low, this will keep you and your camera on plane with the action, and give you a point of view that most photogs won't get. |

In terms of shooting under track lights, generally speaking, what sort of fstop/iso/shutter speed combo would you be using usually?
The event starts before sunset, but goes into the night. Do you think I have a chance at getting any night shots in with the f4/5.6?

Not sure if the image uploaded or not... but this was a night shot taken with low track lighting at the Outlaw Sprints last year.
