Decided to take my old Olympus OM-F film camera out for a walk to compare film to digital photo quality.
Unfortunately 3 of the prints have this flare in the middle of the frame. This one was taken with a 28mm lens, and several were taken with a 18-70 mm OMF lens. The prints were not at the beginning of the roll. Frames 3a, 5a shown, and 19a have this flare to some degree. The camera has an auto-winder attached. The film was new iso 400 Kodak.
Any suggestion on what is causing this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

From back in my film days, that reminds me of light leaking onto the negative far more than any kind of flare I've ever seen.

I agree, it does look like a light leak. There's the vertical streak, but then also the area to the left looks like it was affected somewhat. |

double check the negative ..
it may be a printing error ... |

I agree, but it's odd if it's not on all of your shots. I had an old film lens that did something very similar. |

Looks to me this has more to do with the lack of a lens hood than anything related to use of film.
Ignoring the flare, it does reinforce the idea that the overall quality of digital imaging is no longer 'worse' than film. :)

It's not flare - Defo a light leak problem - Does your camera have one of those plastic slits in the back that lets you see what film you are using?
If not then you have some light leaking in somewhere. |

I agree that it looks more like light leaking into onto the film. Check and see if the flare is on the neg. If it is not on the neg, then it was the fault of the people doing your processing. If it is on the neg then the problem could be the back of your camera is not sealing properly, or poor loading and unloading. If the camera has not been used for a while then the back may may not be closing properly, or may be loose and opening just enough to leak light every once in a while. |

Thanks everyone for your comments. The flare is also on the negatives. I agree it is a light leak through the rear cover. I plan to shoot a second roll, placing electrical tape over the cover seams to determine if this will solve the problem. If so the camera will need repair.
Looking at the photo's that did turn out my opinion is film offers higher resolution and clarity then digital. I plan to shot the same subject with both my Canon 350D and the Olympus using the OM-F or OM-10 bodies. |

Frame 15a from the same roll. NO light leak.
