Much of what is interesting in life, both visually and emotionally, happens as things are shifting from one thing to another. Sunset. Sunrise. Times of ritual when society shifts to accept new members or new arrangements. We have these liminal spaces--a term borrowed from anthropology--and liminal times quite often, and they are wonderful times for capturing people and other subjects on film. One photographer who has a noted skill at capturing these moments is Inga Fang.

When one look at her photos, one can find these moments sprinkled throughout, adding life and depth to her images. Using the liminal, or space between, gives Inga's work a very interesting sense of style.

Times of limen can be long, as in this photograph, where she captures the beauty of pregnancy and reinforces its betweenness through her wide tonal range from light to dark. In this image, she is able to show us the liminality of autumn as she contrasts order with the chaos that it makes.

This photo communicates a much shorter liminal time, as she captures this woman between major modes of thought. The freshness of the gesture is easily seen. Likewise, the zipping of pants is a time of transition as well, which gives the image immediacy, as we've taken them between major modes of thought, just like the woman.

I find her use of detail incredible. In this image, see how she uses the mown grass and unmown grass to emphasize the role of this girl in participating in the liminality of a wedding as two people change their roles and identities in society, evoked by the bride's maid.

Here, she uses color to show the contrasts between the two subjects. See how the flower 'invades' the liminal space of the rusty iron grating--whose liminality is much longer than the flower's. It is as if the flower appears here, and will be gone again, as this hunk of iron slowly becomes earth.

Contrast is used again to emphasize liminality in a simple road sign that is far from simple. I like the fact that it is a yield sign (appropriate for times of betweenness, don't you think? Add to this the fact that the sign appears in a wintery landscape nicely alludes to the fact that when winter comes, we must slow down for a time--but it hints that there is an end, too, so provide a slight bit of hope. These are complex things that this simple photograph evokes.

As I hopefully communicated, times of liminality are ripe for photograph capturing! And Inga's work provides some wonderful examples of how this can work.

I'd be interested in knowing what your favorite shots of hers are, and whether you think they show liminality or not.

Thank you dsidwell. Good choice and I love your comments.
Many of her shots do show or share immediacy.
It's an element that I will try harder to incorporate into my photos.

Congratulations Inga Fang!

I agree on all the photos above, and really appretiate the insight of dsidwell - you really made me think. Of course I like anything Icelandic (even enough to marry one!) and I love all her Iceland pictures -but here's one that is different and daring:

I love the sense of reckless speed

....from Black on Black
I too am a fan of Inga. I think her monotones as a collection, is one of the best on this site. Her images: Possess an understated kind of power that is undeniable - it is direct and true.... she practices a style and a signature that I admire, which does not bow to wow or flash.... she displays responsibility to her reality, which she shares beautifully.

Undieyatch said it well. David resurrected her with grace and lucidly from the maze.
I say, Inga has the advantage. She lives in Iceland. ;-)

These two are dear to me:

I've been watching Inga's submissions to the challenges with interest for a long time now, she certainly has a good eye and makes the most out of her photos. When I look at her photos of Iceland in her portfolio I immediately get the urge to want to spend my next holiday there. Thank you David for that fine profile. And Inga I am looking forward to seeing your next pics.

Oh yeah and her profile photo is sooo cute :-)
