I am so frustrated. I spent all morning trying to get a decent shot of cinnamon sticks. I don't have a studio lighting. Everything came out like crap. What do you think of this?

It's nice, but I'd like to see just a little deeper dof. Also, the foreground is just a hair hot, but overall it is a very nice image.

thanks. This was shot at f2.8 with my macro lens. I might reshoot with smaller aperature. |

Just a stop should do you. I like the idea of the shallow dof, but I'd like to see a little more focused. I also like the blue that you have it set against. Set up the tripod and use ambient light. That would most likely give a nice result.

Also, it's a bit distracting that the end of the cinnamon sticks are cut off. |

Yeah, I think Agent Mulder is write. The fact that the sticks are cut off throws of the composition i think.
His ever so faithful,
Dana Scully :) (i'm a guy though hehe) |

I dunno ... does it look better cropped tight, warmed and sharpened?

I like the crop, Greetmir. It does improve the photo. As always, technique and composition go hand in hand. The whole point is to make that initial impact. |

I have no special technique ... For Hue and Sat I just play with the sliders until I like the result.
Often best to do a layer/duplicate layer and work on that in case you botch it ... you can always just delete that adjustment layer and start again from the original where you started mucking with it.
For selective colour it is under image/adjustments/selective colour and I just choose red (at the top) and push the magenta slider up a bit and pull back a bit on cyan and then go to white and try sliding up a bit of magenta and yellow? ... its all just experimentation.
