I had a website question, since it appears that many of you work with things like MySQL website interfacing, etc.
We hired a design firm to design our website and then help us maintain it. They're doing a lousy job. Some of their website features don't work and even though they've designed an interface so we can update text, etc. on the site, they are unresponsive to even the most trivial of concerns.
How much work would it be to move the entire site to a new host? When I ftp into the site, it appears it's MySQL based to some extent (I have an EXTREMELY limited knowledge of MySQL--I'm still in the olden days of html). Of course, fixing their mistakes may be lots of work, but I'm thinking they're just overwhelmed and have dug a hole for themselves.
Any thoughts? Anyone want to bid on the job (just kidding--for now...).

Pretty easy though I don't see the connection between your host and designer. Are the designers hosting it for you? |

Moving PHP code and mySQL data to another server is the easy part.
Maintaining (fixing, updating) someone else's code is generally difficult, depending on how professionally it was coded and documented, and of course the complexity of the code.
It also depends, as Technoshroom asked, whether you have authorized access to the server to get the data and files.

The designers are indeed hosting the site, too. Not a good mix, I've decided.
I'm used to ftp-ing into a site to update web pages and information, but I'm not an SQL guy, and so have found it challenging. I guess I'll have to learn MySQL now. Sounds fun.
I'm not sure how poorly or expertly it's been coded, but I do know that we've been having problems; I'm assuming it's their coding, but it could simply be the interface they've designed for us that allows us to change text and information with admin privileges.
Thanks for the compliments about the hat. I find the feather particularly fetching.

Ask them to give you access to the phpmyadmin software which probably already exists on your server, in order to do your own backups. From phpmyadmin, you'll be able to backup of the data to your local machine, and load that on another mysql server. To actually move with their software, you also need to download the PHP files and any other support files, like style sheets.
Or you could just ask them to give you a complete backup of the your database, for your own "peace of mind".

Make sure it's data and tables/structure or have them do a dump for you. |
