I really tried to look but the forums are sooo full of stuff! I've been told this is legal but I just wanted to double check.
In advanged is it legal to change the color of your background?
Like for example
Made a white background green and added a vignette underneath me. I think the vignette is pushing it but how about the color change? I understand you can selectively change color legally but does it violate "major elements" or the new one I guess "no new shapes or features". |

Both legal in advanced, yup. In fact, you can even change the BG color in basic editing as long as you don't have to do any selections. For example, if you had a blue BG and nothing else in the picture was blue, you could use hue/saturation or selective color in the blue/cyan range to change the BG color. It depends on how the changes youw ant affect the other areas of the image, since you can't select the BG to isolate it.

Cool! I'm always just so paranoid about the ever vague parts of the rules.
Now... can you only CHANGE the color or can you do other things like paint the color you want over (what I did in this case) or lets say guassian blur the background (plus color) out to avoid the texture of the wall, etc? |

pretty much anything if your not changing major elements and changing a viewers view on the photo |

If your changes would make me change my description from, say, "a girl with long brown hair striking a fashion pose" to, maybe, " a girl striking a fashion pose in front of a *fill-in-the-blank" THEN you've gone beyond the rules.
In this case the background isn't enough of a factor for the colour of it to enter into the average person's description.
So just keep your background as a complement to the main subject, rather than becoming a part of the subject, and most changes you can make will be just fine :) |

O ... M ... G ... It would have taken me a moment to notice a M1A1 TANK behind you, no less a vignette.

Well... I do this same look but sometimes with different methods.
There are a number of things you can do, and mix and match to whatever looks good.
-Usually I cut myself out an add a gradient fill behind me and often a vignette
-For this one I made a selection of the backgroud and then put the gradient I wanted only in the selection and then put the layer on color mode I beleive. THe vignette was a little harder since I didn't cut myself out. I had to erase it where it fell on my legs.
This photo...
I guassian blurred just the background and added the color over top of it. The blur allowed it to keep the right shadows without seeing the texture of the wall.
You can also change the hue of your selection. |

Thank you Monica. You should think about writing a tutorial for this to put up in the "Tutorials" section of DPC.
