Ok, it is purely hypothetical, but it could happen and i would be very interested in hearing peoples views.
Scenario:
You are a very well respected photographer and adored by many. You get a call last minute from a friend who is doing a wedding shoot but is unable to amke it due to illness and cannot cancel and spoil the bride and grooms day so you agree to do the shoot but must rush and get your gear ready.
You grab your gear and make the trip to the wedding.
Everything appears to be going great however you run out of space on the compact flash card and you realise that the only spare one you have left contains the pictures from the wedding the day before and you had not managed to back them up yet.
You do not have have any other storage device, no laptop no means of transfering the pictures. Time is critical and you need to make a decision.
Do you bite the bullet and tell the bride and groom whats happened and ruin their day and probably put you out of business as well as your friend
or
Do you pop the other compact flash card in wipe the previous images to make space for this wedding knowing that you are going to ruin the other couples wedding.
Or do you have another suggestion.......... |

Find some person at the wedding that also has a camera, explain the situation and then steal their card. Or you can see (if they have it at a hotel) if the hotel has a computer you could transfer some files onto and burn them to a cd. Or just do what I do, carry an extra flash card or laptop in your car.

You review the pictures you have already shot on your LCD and erase the ones that don't look like they will make the cut anyway, freeing up more space on the card. You can do this with both cards.

Yup.
And doing this while at the same time kicking yourself repeatedly in the ass enhances the learning process :-) |

That is a critical error in one's system. You shouldn't have a card with the wedding pictures from the day before. It should be a practice to make a backup all pictures that day, so this doesn't happen. What if 2 days later, you loose the card?
I would call up the person you're subbing for and have them bring you another card. Don't screw over the wedding you did the day before. They were your clients and this extra job is a favor you're doing for a friend.

Hypothetically it would never happen to me for several reasons. I'd never accept a last minute job where I had to rush around and gather things to shoot such an important event. I would not be familiar with the contract or the requirments that the B&G and original photog have agreed on. I never leave the house with less then 10GB of storage, and never leave anything on a card for more then 24 hours that isnt D/l to my computer and/or burned to a DVD. So hypotheically I'd never get in that situation.

It'd never happen to me because no one would call me to fill in for them. :)
That said, I think the only recourse I think you might be able to squeeze by is to delete the ones you don't think will pass muster, or the duplicates you might have. |

quickly go into a bathroom, fill a trashcan full of tissue, and throw in a match. run out screaming, "FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!" then go buy some extra memory while everyone else is pre-occuplied... |

Definitely don't erase photos from the previous wedding. You could go through and purge the ones that you think aren't as good, and then go back shooting at a lower resolution. That's probably what I would do if that was the case
