bring it down lower - my daughters only 13.
How about an under 15's challenge ? Are there enough people out there ?
While I can understand people's various arguments I do feel sorry for the much younger members, particularly when they get unhelpful comments. So i think it would be encouraging for them to have a Free Study where (hopefully) the people that commented would appreciate their age and lack of experience, and give them some praise and pointers to help them develop further. |

I guess i knida understand but would you rather get 5th competing against some great young people and some 5 year olds(there are some of thise here) or rather get 10th competeing against the best.
IF there was another "no ribbon" challenge I would of course compete but if i won it would seem hollow because i knew i was not competeing against all of the best. (just most because we all know tha non ribbon winners are better:P)

The problem is that the cut-off keeps rising . . U18/20/21 . .33 . .
To be honest I think at 18+ you are big boys and girls and can compete with the rest of us old and uglies (both are true in my case) :-)
If we are going to do a young persons challenge lets push the age right down and try to encourage. Under 15's Yay !!
Go on . .you know you want to . . :-)

If the concern is to help kids who can't compete against adults, then can I join? I can't compete against adults, either. Then again, I can't compete against many of the kids.
I don't mind giving kids their own little corner of the world, but I think a dedicated challenge is the wrong solution. I mean, kids can learn photography just like adults, unlike, sports, where physical differences apply.
If the concern is kids whose emotional states are perhaps less mature, so they get hurt by some of the strongly worded comments, then how about instead having a side challenge where people are invited to comment gently on kids' photos? Create a thread and I betcha you'll get plenty of help.
Or create an ongoing kids' support thread like we have going for team suck.
Finally, you always have to think about implementation. How do you know how old anyone is?

I'm all in favor, but with just one question. How do we keep people from puttink fake ages in their profiles?

My 13 year old daughter just joined. She's a beginner, and I'd love to see a "under 15" competition. Hopefully, most voters would take age into consideration & give some really useful feedback. |

Just a quick note that this thread was 9 months old when it was rejuvenated.
I still think that, especially for beginners, a side challenge is much more helpful and educational. Why make:
a) voters wade through a lot of poor photos (if your argument is that many won't be poor quality, then why not just enter them in normal challenges?)
b) young photographers deal with what will undoubtedly be a raft of negative comments, many of which won't be considerate of their feelings?
A side challenge, in contrast, usually involves helpful, constructive criticism, where people do take things into account, like context.

We're supposed to search before starting a new thread. Right? Right.
I thought it would be a fun challenge to vote and comment on.
I think everyone would take into consideration the age group and comment accordingly. Reading the critiques could be a learning experience for all.
