I had fun shooting smoke for the first time, so threw one of them into the free study. I had two shots and two variations of each to choose from.
I realize that abstract shots depend highly on personal taste, but I'm curious to know what folks think and whether there's anything objective at all that I could use in the future.
Here's my entry. It did fine in the scoring.
Here was my primary alternative, putting it in white:
And here's the other set of variants, which were much more abstract:
Questions:
1) Do you like the recognizable shape or the abstract more?
2) Black or white?
3) Is there anything objective to any of them, or is it all just taste?
Thanks!

from the first set
from the second
I have never shot smoke but I like these best :)
The purple one on black is nice but it leaves little to the imagination IMO... the white one made me think more about the thinner parts of a flower and the fragility... (from the thumbs, I thought I liked the black one more) :)
The rainbow coloured ones are more interesting but not as clear as the purple ones... the white rainbow one hid more of the "unclearness" and so it was a little more pleasing (for me) to look at. |

I like the one with the rainbow colours on black the best. (How did you get those colours?) I don't like the tip of the incense showing in the image.

i like the purple on white most, but agree with Greetmir 'bout the incense.
The rainbow coloured shots are not sharp enough IMO, try a smaller aperture, I used f/8.0 in this shot.

The smoke is gray. In Photoshop, I created a new layer and set the blending mode to color, then in that layer:
1) Selected some random area with the lasso
2) Feathered the selection so the color will fade instead of creating a hard line
3) Filled the selection with some color
Repeated until it looked nice.
