OK, I'm outta my element here but on a lark I contacted a few of the "lesser" pro teams in Calgary to see if I might be able to get into the arena/park with my gear (and some rentals) to shoot the games.
Well, The Calgary Roughnecks (Lacrosse team) got back to me already and they have a pass waiting at their offices for me! Holy Crap!
So, what I have is my 20d, 17-40 and 70-200 f/4's, both non-IS. Yeah, I know, not fast enough. So, considering they play in rinks the same as NHL, I won't have the ice reflecting any light so other than that I figure my gear should be the same as an NHL game.
Help? Please?
I'm thinking
- 70-200 2.8 IS
- 28-75 2.8
?????

I've never shot like that before, but i imagine you'll be well covered with the two 2.8 lenses you mentioned. Speed is of the upmost importance, obviously.
Are you thinking of investing in those lenses then, or renting?

For now i'd definitely be renting. But one day the 70-200 will find it's way into my bag.

i'd shoot almost everything with a 70-200L f/2.8 IS .
even though the following are NOT lax specific, they might give you some insight into the mindset
shooting sports for a team
event shooting
here's some stuff i shot for a recent magazine assignment. some of this goes beyond just shooting the action. action is fun, and action is important, BUT, it's not the only thing that needs to be shot. if you can cover the whole thing, you'll be able to make yourself worth a lot more. gallery link.
good luck! |

Great links, pics and advice skip. Those should come in handy this weekend and the upcoming football and rugby season.

Rent an extra body and rent both lenses. |
