This might sound like such a newby question but I can't find an answer anywhere. When you hire a model, do you supply the clothes, or do they? If the photographer does, how do they know what size is best, and if the model does how do the know what the photographer's vision is?

Depends on what you want. If you are shooting a fashion magazine you will have the clothing and only need the models. Most other types of shooting will require using the models own clothing. I discuss clothing with my models beforehand telling them what type of clothing I want (business attire, etc.) and ask them to bring several choices. I've even had models wear clothing out of my own closet if I'm not fond of what they brought.

Cindi is absolutely right in her points.

Another thing to consider - if you do need to buy a particular outfit, be SURE to have the model try it before you pay for it. Our first lesson in this cost nearly $100. Now we are stuck with the outfits, as they came from a very small (specialized) store...

Also, don't trust that the model will have the same taste in clothes - when they show up with only two outfits & neither fits what you need, it becomes a hassle...

I hope these help, and don't worry about being a 'noob', we are all noobs to SOMEthing (just in various stages of learning) ;)

edited, cuz i havent had caffeine yet

If you shoot only nude models, then you will not have to worry about clothing.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Thanks for that, I guess I guessed as much but it's better to ask, So I'm guessing you discuss a fair bit about what you intend to shoot with them before the day.

OH YEAH! ... Tell them as much about the shoot you intend as they will tolerate!

Though it's so much harder to find the perfect birthday suit compared to the perfect bathing or business suit.

Yes, definitely. If they are a client for portraits, you discuss what type of clothing would be best, but let them select, it's their portrait. But if its a model who is working for you, for prints or for money, they you should know first what type of shot you need or want to shoot then discuss with the model what clothing she has that might suit your needs -- if she has nothing you may need to buy it. I've had one go borrow clothes from a friend, if you are clever, you'll get what you want...and that is what its all about. :)
