Here is something to put in the "for what its worth" department...
1st Year (60 challenges):
Average entries- 136
Average/Blue- 7.65
*Average/entry- 5.38
Average votes/entry- 208
Average comments/entry- 19.5
Overall (619 challenges):
Average entries- 208
Average/Blue- 7.34
*Average/entry- 5.33
Average votes/entry- 227
Average comments/entry- 13.4
Last Year (189 challenges):
Average entries- 237
Average/Blue- 7.34
*Average/entry- 5.42
Average votes/entry- 236
Average comments/entry- 12.4
Last three Months (44 challenges):
Average entries- 226
Average/Blue- 7.39
*Average/entry- 5.5
Average votes/entry- 231
Average comments/entry- 12.5
Summary:
Probably the most interesting indication from these numbers is that DPC voters have remained remarkably stable in their voting patterns over time despite improvements in camera equipment, post processing skills and presumably an overall increase in the quality of entries.
The average score for blue ribbon winners has actually dropped since the first year to remain steady at around 7.3... On the other hand the average score per entry has risen slightly since the first year to its best overall rating of 5.5 in the last three months.
Not surprising, the average number of entries per challenge has increased from 136 to over 230 in the last year and the number of comments per entry has dropped since the first year as a result.
The difference between the score for blue ribbon winners and the average image is only about 2 points indicating that DPC voters trend toward voting the middle of the scale.
* The Average Score given is actually an average of averages so is not absolutely correct, but is probably close enough to be meaningful.

Very interesting read, I always had the impression that the first years scores were much higher. Thanks for bringing these interesting numbers to light.. |

The three things I find most interesting about these numbers:
1-How consistent voting has been over time.
2-How narrow the voting range is.
The blue and the "brown" don't stray much more than 2 points from the overall average score.
3-How low scoring tends to be given the overall quality of submissions.

Another interesting variable to include in the analysis would be # of repeeated challenges in those time periods like so
Last Year - 189 Challenges - 100 Unique Challenges / 89 Recycled Challenges
...or for that matter a comparison on challenge outcomes for each time the challenge re-pops.
edit: forgot to add, this is a cool breakdown. It is always fun to chew on stats.
