Recently my computer has been shutting down unexpectedly and I get a blue screen with Machine Check Exception on it but that is all I can read before the computer reboots.

Is this a hardware or software issue?

Can a virus cause this?

Help, please!

Most often a hardware issue.
Try reseating your memory sticks (RAM) and and cards in the slots of the motherboard such as video, sound, network, modem, etc. While inside, make sure the CPU fan/heatsink is cleaned off and blow the dust out of the whole thing. Always be careful and ground yourself prior to touching the internals or attach a ground strap from you to the case.

Sounds like a hardware problem. Did you recently add anything to your machine? do you have enough voltage to go around? I've had something similar happen to me after adding a HDD and not having a big enough PSU.

I have added nothing new since I bought it one year ago.

I opened it up and it was disgustingly filthy and dusty. I cleaned everything up and reassembled. So now I will just wait and see.

I read that it could be an overheating issue possibly so I cleaned off thick layers of dust...really thick...it was gross.

The store where I bought it said it could be a virus...I don't believe it. I bought an extended warranty so if this continues and is a hardware issue, they will have to fix it.

Thank you!

Reseating the memory chips and cleaning the dust out of the innards is the right start.

Based on your description, it certainly sounds like the machine could simply be running too hot as a result of all of the crud.

See how it does now, and let us know.
