I am setting up a shoot for my daughter's dance studio for the end of the season(this spring)

In some cases I may be shooting as many as 25 kids. I need to find a backdrop that is versatile for individual shots (soloists) as well as group shots. I am thinking that the backdrop should be approx 20-25 feet wide and say 30 feet long.

Any thoughts or input in regard to this would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe somebody has a backdrop that fits this bill that they want to sell/rent.

Thanks in advance

Hi Coley,

Is there a specific color or texture that you need ?

I have a sail boat and to cover it (for winter storage) I use a tarp. They come come in different sizes and colors... could be puchased at any Home Dépôt , Candadian Tire, Wallmart so on...

If not, you can use seemless back drop paper... they come in many colors, you can roll them for storage and you can also overlap it for different sizes....

Hope this could help !

Cheers

Canvas painters dropcloth comes to mind. Sometimes big rolls of a slightly off white are available, again, Home Depot, etc. Not as clean as paper or a sheet with regard to texture. Just an idea.

If you have access to a stage, the curtains there would make a good backdrop. The problem with buying painters drop cloths is that the bigger ones are sewed together to make them so big. If you can put pleats for a drapped effect, you can hide it, or you can photoshop it out later if you place it where it's not in an important spot. The other problem though is that they are just plain ugly. You could use gels to change the colors, but then that's a lot of work for the size of the group you are shooting.

You might use a normal size backdrop for the individual portraits and use something like a wall or other area for the large groups. A lot is going to depend on how much room you have for the groups. If you have lots of room, you can be well away from the background and it will go out of focus. If you are tight for room, then everyone is going to be squeezed tight together and you will be very close to the background.

What you could do is get a 10x20 or 10x40 and put it sideways. You won't have the background out in front of the people, but if you have a nice floor and the right color background, it won't look bad enough to matter.

If you are in the Portland area, I have a number of 10x20 painted muslin backgrounds that I have let people use in the past.
