My iTunes has disappearing music.
I have to go back into my hard drive to recover the music that disappears and drag and drop into iTunes.
Such a waste of time, and a big headache.
Why are these songs disappearing?
How do I keep them from disappearing from iTunes?
I have several hard drives with alot of capacity, 1g of ram, and use Windows XP.
Thanks in advance.

I don't understand. iTunes music IS on your hard drive. Can you be (much) more specific about what's happening? Also, what OS, etc. |

We had the same thing happen with Napster. We had free down loads and one day they all went 'poof'. We had them on the hard drive also and couldn't be re-loaded. We assumed they expired >
I don't know if you were buying them or using a free promotion. |

iTunes doesn't run any time limited promos like that. I assume it's something to do with the way he's organizing his stuff on his hard drive, but need to hear more from Horse. |

Apple's free stuff is licesned the same as the paid for unless otherwise noted. Ive been using iTunes on windows since the first pepsi promo and I've fortunatly never had this problem. |

I've read/heard there is a "Mission Impossible" distroy item written into most downloaded music files. So if you drop their subscription, the downloaded music distroyes itself after a certain time. But, I'm not sure about this. |

Apple iTunes has no subscription at all.
In fact if you have aol you dont even have to sign up. BUt iTunes is a non fee, no subscription service. You pay only for your music. You can burn a playlist up to 7 times (only limited if it contains music u bought). But once uve burned a song to disc u can reimport it to any format that it can play or any other cd ripper. And then uve just stripped the drm lol. Or there are DRM strippers for itunes now.
And i bet you alot of his music is just in itunes not from itunes. Itunes is a media player like windows media player.

Basically,
The music that I upload, from CD is completely gone. Prolly some sort of license thing.
But, the music I download either through Limewire, or iTunes disappears off of iTunes.
I do a search for '.mp3', and voilla, there are the tunes. So, I have to go into my hard drive, put music into a separate folder, then drag and drop back into iTunes, then erase the 'non-music duplicates'.
Very frustrateing.
I found a thing in the iTunes consumer help about how to find missing music that has been downloaded, but have not found anything about other people having htis dillema.
Thanks.

I had CD's that i ripped 4 years ago from 2 or 3 itunes versions ago and still have them. Plus all my recent stuff.
Make sure ur not moving the files somewhere. If you move the files iTunes will still list the music but wont be able to find them or play them. What you really should so is set itunes to copy the files into the itunes library (the actual itunes folder in my music) and also set the options to let it organize it for you.

Have you tried to modify or customize, in any way, where the music is stored on your hard disk? iTunes, like most modern media managers, likes to do its own organization, its own way. If you tamper with the locations of files or folders in any way, you may have problems like you're experiencing.
Open iTunes preferences (I'm Mac based, so our menus may not be identical). In prefs, open Advanced and then select the General tab. You have two check boxes:
- Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized
- Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder
Are they checked? If not, check both of them. Now, any time you copy music files into your iTunes application (dragging them directly onto the itunes Window, or otherwise), the music files will be copied and placed into iTunes own folder/director structure, which is by artist and album. You may need to do some dupe removing, but letting iTunes manage your collection is the best way (IMO) to use and get the full benefit of iTunes.
Note: some people really dislike an app that wants to "manage" your stuff. This method of using iTunes is not for those people. I used to be that way, but eventually gave in and accepted Apple's wisdom. |

Thanks John, checked boxes.
Found music in the Owner Limewire folder.
Now, I can not drag and drop into my folder the lost music. But, wasn't able to do so anyway before checking boxes.
thanks.
