I've been playing with my flash system tonight, and it's got be baffled. Everything was working just fine until I moved the tripod and bumped the cords, which set the flashes off. After that, they won't fire with the camera. And even though their status light is on, I can't get them to test fire with their individual buttons, nor will they turn off until I unplug the camera from the whole setup. I've tried several shut-down and restart sequences, but can't seem to get them to fire again.
I'm using two Nikon SB-26 hotshoe flashes, mounted on lightstands, and the whole thing is connected together with short PC cords plugged into homemade extension cords. The two flash cords plug into a multiplug piece, as does the cord leading to the camera. (I got the plans from the Strobist blog)
I determined early on that everything had to be plugged in exactly right polarity wise, so I have it all marked, and it has worked in the past few times. But not now. Can anyone out there shed some light on this?
I can't afford PocketWizards by any stretch, but I'm starting to think that maybe the eBay radio slaves might be the way to go instead of all these cords! Insights on that are quite welcome as well.
