A little background. I took a photograph years ago of the Michigan State Capital Dome. It did pretty good in the challenge. Last week I was voting in the Fill the Frame II challenge and saw an almost identical shot. I knew it had to be taterbug's shot. My first gut reaction was to feel hurt that he would use a shot so similar to mine in a challenge without telling me about it. The next time I saw him (we work together on the weekends) I told him how I felt. However, I apparently didn't do a very good job of it. I just a little bit ago I checked my email and saw that he sent me this two days ago:

Dude,
So what a week it's been. I go out for the first time in I don't know how long shooting, and get some cool shots. I'm editing and got this one that looks good to me, and like it would fit in 'fill the frame'. Hesitant to enter, cause I certainly don't consider it 'expert' editing, but, what the heck, in it goes. So I'm working at rollover, get home a few hours later, to find a score I've never even dreamed of. Then it's like sitting on a crate of eggs, waiting to see if it's going to actually hold. A few days of being nervous, yet excited and almost giddy with glee and all kinds of great feelings. I'm like, this is in possible ribbon territory. I think about the congrats, and kudos if it does. Of course, you know what it's like, you've got a couple ribbons, a few honorable mentions, and more 6+ than you can count. I think about how proud you, my shootin' buddy, mentor, and friend will be.

Then, I get blind sided by your attack, and saying basically I cheated, and my editing sucks, and there's no way it should be scoring that high. Then I hear about the rant a couple more times later that night from guys. Wow. If you really think I just went and found one of your shots and went out to try and copy it for a score, I just don't even know what to say. Your 'Orange' shot is like at least a couple years old. I havn't seen it in probably close to that long, I certainly don't have it committed to memory. I've looked through the on site galleries and see that there are all kinds of 'dome' shots from all over that are composed very similarly. It's like you said, Just about anyone walking in there with a camera is gonna get about the same shot, it is just screaming to be seen. The rest of the week has sucked. I've been bouncing between feeling bewildered, resolved, pissed, and just downright hurt. Definitely not the feeling that I'm sure most people get when they're sitting in that spot. I even considered just saying fuck it, and self dq. Sheila convinced me otherwise. I just think it sucks, that a stupid fucking picture could come between us. I just don't know..... thanks dude, thanks a lot.

I didn't see this till I started this thread. Now I can't get a hold of him. He hasn't answered his home or cell phone. He was supposed to work tonight so I ran in to talk to him. He wasn't there. He called in apparently (Dude I hope you and yours are all right...) and I didn't get a chance to talk to him there either. So I post here where I know he will see it...

Anyways, Dude, I feel like a total ass right now. I don't think you cheated. I just (at the time) wished you would have told me you entered a shot so similar to mine. I would never think of entering one so close to one of yours with out your permission and without you seeing it. I was very surprised (and a little jealous/shocked/bewildered/hurt) to see it score so highly when my shot (which did very well, don't get me wrong) scored a whole point lower. I am very proud (and a little jealous that you did it before me) that you, my best friend for a quarter of a century, broke a seven. I am very proud that you got your first ribbon (my comment on your placing was supposed to be funny but now that I read it again it seems a little put offish). I would be very pissed at myself and you if you would have pulled it out of the challenge and I'm glad as hell that you didn't. Most of all, I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings. Nothing as stupid as a picture will ever change the fact that you are my brotha from anotha motha.

I love ya dude and I'm sorry...

Yours forever
TC

Edit to add: I still do think your editing on this shot sucked! :-P

Pardon me for coming in and leaving a bit of commentary. I looked at both of the shots and they are both wonderful!!! But do you know what is really cool that both of you gentleman may not have seen.

Taterbug's version with the cool and beautiful blues

looks like it is the Moon & Stars

TooCool's version with the lovely yellows and oranges

looks like the summer sun.

Two great ribbon winners that if paired on a wall appear as a matched celestial set.

I truly hope the both of you can work this out.

Interesting that the first thing I though of after seeing the picture was Toocool or taterbug because I know you guys sometimes shoot together and I recall your previous entry of the same shot.

Since I haven't won a ribbon yet I was thinking of vacationing in Oregon and hopefully check out a certain beach :P

I hope everything works out ok for the two of you. we are on the outside looking in but I'm sure that I'm not the only one who would kill to have a dpc best friend like this.

I've been in bed, sick all night. I just got up a little bit ago and am just seeing this. I'm off to see if TC is still up. I'll be back in a little while.

If anyone is still interested, TC and I had a long talk...things are cool :-)

Oh, and he still doesn't like my editing :-P ...but that's ok, he often doesn't! ...which is just a difference between us, Ron tends to be more of a, technical, detail oriented type, and me, I'm more of a shoot from the hip on the run 'artsy' type :-) (probably from my years of playing guitar in hardcore punk bands!)

my thanks to everbuddy that was concerned, and that noone (as often happens) jumped on the bandwagon and started slamming either one of us!

Dammit! I missed the bandwagon again! :(

Glad to hear you've worked it out. Hope you feel better, tater.

Congratulations to both of you for handling your differences with such maturity and openness. You set a wonderful example of how to approach and resolve problems everyone one of us has encountered in our interaction with others.

To take it one step further, you've just demonstrated how peace is achieved.
