There's a sorta smudge thingy at the top of the monitor that won't clean off, and it's growing! Over the last couple of weeks, it's gotten worse so tonight I called Dell. Now, I'm on hold.

Still on hold.

and. . . . .

Still on hold.

Wish me luck. :)

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Are you sure it is on the outside? Has someone had access to your computer with time to install a prank?

The LCD liquid crystals seem to have burst ... that is really strange looking!

Just the dog, and she's not that computer savvy. :)

That's what the tech rep just said, even though she didn't want to see the picture. :)

Now. . . . I'm on hold again. :(

If you push in at the top of the screen, does the smudge 'move around' ?

There's a layer of liquid (like oil) under the glass of LCDs. From your photo it looks like it is either leaking away from that area or the glass is warping away from the underlying surface.

I know this because I just *had* to dismantle an old laptop LCD a few months ago, to see how it worked. ;-)

The reason I asked is because I have seen (and used) similar pranks before.

PS: I can't believe that page is still there. I haven't been there in years.

Now that.. is weird!

Well, I'm really glad to know that it isn't just me. I've been playing with computers for a lot of years now and I have never seen an LCD do this before.

The bad news it that I'm off hold, and was digging the 'on hold' music. If you ever get the chance to call Dell tech support, ask them to put you on hold for the experience of listening to that music. If you never call Dell, just poke yourself in the eye with a stick a few times. Same effect. :)

The good news is that my new monitor is being shipped out. (Yay warranty!)

Good news, glad to hear Dell is going to make it right.

Heh, My dealership warrantied out a battery that was 12 years old. What can I say we hate dealing with old people that think a car battery lasting more then 5 years was actually defective...... I've enevr in my life heard of a Lead Acid car battery lasting 12 years... espcially one that was made tot he spec's of 12 years ago...

Get them out of our face as fast as possible!

But im assuimng the moniter was somewhat new. Ive seen some LCD's fail ive also seen some take extreme abuse.

So. . . . the original battery in my 2000 Ford Ranger might fail in about 5 years? That's just poor quality! :)

Seriously, the monitor is less than 6 months old, and I was kidding when I said it was leaking. When the tech rep said that's what it sounded like, I had to pause. LCD. . . Liquid Crystal Display.

Duh! And I'm an electronics technician! I teach this stuff for crying out loud! I felt pretty stupid after that. (Still do, but I'm getting over it with each beer.) :)

Glad you have another one coming under warranty - that is pretty weird.

I don't want to jack this thread, but on the subject of car batteries.
Nearly everyone has or will deal with a dead battery in time:

Replace them every 4 years. Period.
* Car batteries can and will fail without warning, leaving you stranded.
* Car batteries over 4 years old have little reserve for times lights were left on while shopping, leaving you stranded.
* Car batteries slowly degrade, often slow enough the driver won't even notice until the damage has been done.
* Car batteries are so neglected and often "quickie" oil change places are in a hurry and never check the water levels on those batteries that are not of the maintenance-free types.

What damage?
1) The starter. It is an electric motor designed by it's construction, to turn at a specific speed, assuming good connections and proper voltage. When the voltage drops, that motor still wants to turn at that speed, and will draw more Amperage to do so, causing brushes to burn-out early. Replacing a starter can be a $300-400 job (sometimes more), using a quality part (not the do it yourself discount parts chains).

2) The alternator. The battery "tells" the alternator what it needs to do, or tells the vehicle's computer what it needs, in turn, telling the alternator to have to go to 100% output as soon as the engine is started. Bad idea, and again, premature wear. Replacing an alterntor can be a $300-500 job, using a quality part (not the do it yourself discount parts chains).

I always recommend my customers replace their battery at about the 4-year mark for the reasons listed above. Kinda' silly when you think about an $80 battery (as an example) leaving you stranded, and always at the worst time possible. $20 / year is real cheap insurance, especially considering the price of a starter or alternator that was burnt-out prematurely because it was left in use too long.

OK, I was happy with Dell support last night, even though I got put on hold for quite some time. Still, this is almost unbelievable. My new monitor just arrived! How's that for service? :)

Good to hear it worked out! What was the model of the monitor? I picked up the 20" widescreen (2007WFP) a few months ago, and just want to know how much time I have left to enjoy it. :-)
