I was contacted yesterday by someone wanting to use my image to paint.
It is already a digital 'painting'. I also sell prints of my digital paintings.
She wouldn't be offering to buy my image if she didn't want to turn around and sell the paintings or prints of the painting herself.
I'm really at a loss here about what to do.

I have already emailed her asking her several questions such as;
will you be selling the original painting?
will you be making prints of the painting for sale?
If so, how many prints are you planning on selling?
Will you be giving credit to the original image at shows?
I have also asked to see some of her other works.

Any advice on other questions to ask?
Any help is appreciated.

I had a similar situation where a guy saw my Bobby The Boxer image hanging in a bar.

He did mostly sports photo repro's but thought Bobby had a really rare, interesting look (which he does, imo). I had a small print in my bag , almost at 8x11 which I let him have, unsigned, at $50.

It's hard to advise on your shot since it's a still life which I assume she herself can recreate if she needed to. I could be wrong there but it's a possibility that is worth considering. My only thought would be to consider her options if you overcharge.

I had an artist ask to use one of my photographs as a basis for a painting in exchange for a small fee. In my case, a look at her portfolio made it clear that her painting was extremely stylised and not at all photorealistic and so sales of her painting (and any prints derived from it) would be extremely unlikely to impact on my own sales of the photograph. As she also agreed to make a donation to a favourite wildlife conservation charity of mine I sold her the rights to base one or more paintings on my photograph for £50.

In your case, I'd definitely establish how closely her art work would resemble the original and use that to help you make your decision.

Should you decide to go ahead and grant her permission, you'll obviously need to take into account her answers about usage (painting, prints and so on) in order to set a price.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I feel much better about it now.
Hopefully she will get back with me soon.
