Why can't we just recycle a complaint thread from Shallow DOF I or II and save a bunch of typing? |

Because that isn't our way!
Now that you mention it, though, I'm gonna have to go find those and read them..... |

Aah i feel a rosy glow reading these comments (are we allowed a rosy glow of our own?). I have also only had 1 comment which kindly explained to me that my DOF was not shallow enough...
I debated last night between entering a shot that was inarguably 'shallow DOF' or one that was also shallow DOF and a more rounded picture - by the time I had sunk to a 4.8 I was realising that maybe I should have gone with the first choice, to keep it simple - but hey, I like the shot so ya-boo!!

Photography "critiquing" is a subjective process and is not really objective. Even when DPC rules/criteria are considered, if a person just doesn't like the subject or the composition, it won't score well.

I don't know, perhaps I am just being picky or forming my own opinion. |
i agree my shot definitly isnt like that.
but im getting bashed around like a (insert witty metaphor here). |

My two comments, both saying "not shallow," are from people who rarely enter challenges, and have atrocious votes cast averages. Frustrating, to say the least. Until someone with an avg. received above a 5 tells me my shot is "not shallow" I'm going to attribute my low score to voter ignorance.

Don't get me started on the Table Shot challenge - soooo many shots where the camera obviously was not placed on the table. |

Consider yourself lucky if you're getting 5's with a table shot in the Shallow DOF challenge. ;-) |

Kitsilano, a couple blocks from Kits beach.
Which is, coincidently, where my DOF entry is from (Don't worry, you can't tell from the shot...)

On my DOF entry I have got two comments
1. Stating "Great DOF"
2. Stating "Not shallow DOF"
hmm... I am confused. This is making my brain hurt. LOL

FWIW...there are a number of things/subjects in my entry. All but one are completely out of focus and the one things that is in focus, is only 95% there...
"not very shallow dof"
some people don't have a clue...and I don't care
I think people think that they are voting in a Bokeh Challenge?

I've now opened and viewed every single shot, and voted on 137 of them so far. I'll be back later to vote and comment some more but for now my brain hurts and I need to have a break.
Some good shots out there though if you pick through. |

Hmm the guy that said shallow DOF to me also had an avg vote cast of 3.5
there could be a pattern here :-) |

Ummmm. . . .seems to me I read lots of negative comments from you in the wildlife challenge where you did exactly that. sorry, it was something that really bothered me. I wouldn't have mentioned it, except here, you are getting upset that people are doing what you did in the last challenge.

You could set it on fire. That usually helps the subject to stand out. |
I'll try that on my next nude self portait.

. . . . . I am complaining about voters who narrow the challenge description arbitrarily. I have no complaint about those who apply a wider interpretation. |

Well, I did comment on the zoo shots and insect shots, which were specifically not included in that challenge. Nice of you to mention this. Thanks! I also commented on the excellent wildlife shots. |

I see one of three possibilities
a) The shot really wasn't Shallow enough
b) The voter was too shallow
c) The voter took a dive in a pool that was too shallow, bonked his/her head then proceeded to dole out 1's in a concussion induced state of confusion. (i.e. Pretty photo! It's number one!)
Oh yes...if I see a picture of the shallow end of a pool I will instantly ZOT! them with a one.
*edit - I can't count*

Let's draft legislation to define shallow DOF. Getting legislators involved now is the only way to take of this issue. They, after all, are the experts and are good at shallow things. 8^)
I hope someone posts a photo of a dog licking their face for the new "Good" or "Bad" challenges. I was positive which category it would go under...until now. |
