Folks,

I'm looking for anyone with experience using a Speedotron DS-1 Flash Activated Digital Slave Trigger

//www.adorama.com/SZ23504.html

I'm looking for a cheap way of doing off camera flash, but I've also read of others that have used flash slaves only to have them not work properly. Anyone have any experience with this on a 30D or similar Canon? I'm planning on using my 430ex remotely and using the onboard flash for a trigger.

I realize that the better option is to purchase a 580 but I just dont have the money to blow on a second flash right now.

Thanks in advance!

Keep in mind that you will have to use your 430 in manual mode, no nifty E-TTL2 with that sync.

I did something similar before I purchased strobes. The setup I used with my Rebel XT was with Wein hot shoe adaptors and old flash units. Overall, it worked well.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll be sure to post the results of my purchase if I decide to get it.

Yes, you are going to have to shoot the flashes in manual mode, but it's not impossibly difficult.

Might want to check out the Strobist for some ideas.

Just so everyone understands, there's nothing wrong with shooting flashes in manual mode. If you want to control your lighting at all, that's EXACTLY what you need to do. E-TTL actually makes controlling the light almost impossible.

Yes it does... E-TTL makes it IMPOSSIBLE to get consistency between series of shots.

Exactly.

However, many people venturing into off-camera lighting for the first time, automatically assume that the flash will work just like it does on the camera. Then, when it doesn't, they get upset that it's not as straightforward as they thought.

I definitely assumed that I would have to do manual adjustments for the off camera flash, and thank you all for your comments.

The main thing that I'm worried about is ordering this thing from Adorama and it not work at all. I think i'm gonna have to go out on a limb and just buy it. Its only gonna be about 40 bucks so its not that big of a deal. When I get it I'll be sure to report the results.

-Thank you everyone!

I would recommend radio over optical, so that you don't have to have a flash on the camera, but that's just my thoughts.

I got this from ebay. Ultra cheap, works everytime, and if I set my on camera flash to 1/16 it barely contributes to the exposure.

Charalampos,

Yea, I was just looking at one of those. What are you using to fire it?
