So how do you do this? Is it true that alot of engines arent using metatags? What do you guys do? I would like to be searchable. Thanks.

instead of metatags, search engines now look through the content. the more sites that link to your page, the higher your site gets ranked. so, to do better in search results, have other pages link to you.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an industry in and of itself today. Years ago, simply setting the Web pages' meta tags (description and keywords) was the only real way to increase one's ranking in search engines - that and a couple of well placed stealth links pointing back to the same page. Today, search engine ranking has moved way beyond simple indexing and "submitting one's site" to the engines.

Your site needs to be referenced elsewhere and by a multitude of sources. Google adwords and adsense is another tremendous way to bring exposure to your site. There are a slew of books available today on SEO that will go into great detail on these and many other factors.

While I still religioulsy code in all of my meta tags, good business practice forces me to explain to my clients that they need to pay to be ranked - pay-per-click advertising.

There are still several major search engines that will index your site for you, but I think all three combine to bring about the best results:

(1) Good meta tags.
(2) Google Adwords and AdSense.
(3) Submit your site on the search engines.

edit: spelling

Your really don't need to do anything except make sure your site is accessible from the internet. It will eventually get indexed. However, if you want to speed up the process you can submit it to the search engines directly. Look on their individual sites for something along the lines of submit a link or submit a site.

The Open Directory Project is a good place to list your site.

Metatags are almost useless because they are so heavily spammed. Content is the single thing that most heavily influences how your site gets listed. Google provides useful information to webmasters about how to get indexed by them and how to improve page rank.

1. Your site needs to have content, which helps initially
2. Then get some IBLs (In Bound Links) from some quality site related to your context.
3. Create a sitemap file and submit it to the search engines
4. Verify with a text browser, whether all the pages in your web site are crawlable.

These 4 simple steps should help you in making your website searchable
