OK, my $0.02 US:

For those of you that don't know about server side image manipulation it does have some problems and can make a mess of an image real quick.

Don't believe me? Go upload a photo that is 1024 pixels in width to Myspace. In many cases it will make a mess of them when it resizes down to 600 pixels in with. I've seen it too many times. I'll go look at someone's profile and there proudly displayed by the member is one of my photos and it's a MESS - sharpness is gone, JPEG artifacting everywhere, just icky. Same thing with Model Mayhem.

Now, I give models 600 pixel wide photos for myspace and I get much better results.

It's not a problem with Myspace, but rather a problem with letting a computer make decisions that they aren't (at present) able to make. This works ok for sites like Myspace, because it's not an art site and MOST of the photos on it are horrible anyway.

But, DPC is a photography site. Server side manipulation of photos would be a really, really bad thing, especially with the detail and care we put into our images.

Fotoman heres the jist. It doesnt matter what size you upload to myspace. You can go 600 Wide and almos tulimited height. Ive done a 600x8000 before, go ahead upload a 600x800 or 600x450.

at 600x450 MySpace does not resize it why is their still really bad jpeg artifacts?

MySpace and many othersites tell you 600KB upload limit. Their goal is to resave it serverside at 150KB or less. So youre Jpeg 100% at 600 KB just got resaved automaticly to Jpeg 75 at 138 KB.

MySpace recompresses all images even if it does not resize them. Its to save them space they actually set this on purpose.

The two posts that Shoggy made in this forum were his first two posts here on DPC. I'm glad he asked the question. And glad that some people were able to give him a response without losing patience.

I'm new at a lot of things :)

As I said, no offense intended. I want to welcome Shoggy on board and encourage him to ask questions. Often, a fresh face can point out things that we ignore due to familiarity.

The frustrating part is not the asking of the question. That's fine. I would, however, encourage use of the "search" feature to see if a particular "complaint" has been aired out before. It saves a lot of fussing and arguing. The frustrating part is that the same people wind up bickering over this in the same way and it polarizes the membership into yet another argument. It's just disappointing to see the same fights taking place again and again and again on a six week rotation.

I also think that it would serve the admins of the site - not SC because they don't really make this decision - to post an "Explanation" section that outlines the WHY and shows different screen resolutions, poll results, etc., and EDUCATES new users as to why the site is set up the way it is. That would give Shoggy and others a resource to look at instead of having to endure the same debate that happens every time this question comes up.
