I'm not complaining bout my score in Grace, but I would love to know why it didn't do well. I think its the best of my photos to date but maybe its mostly because of the circumstances.. being such a rare capture.
Anyway, if a couple of you could tell me what you don't like about it, I would most appreciate it.
Thanks :)
oops.. here

I didn't vote on your picture but I believe the significance of your photo (even with the title) is not really obvious for people who is not familiar with this subject.... I actually have to read the description before I really 'get it'... I do understand that the idea you have in mind is rather hard to convey, especially when the fish seems camouflaged... It is a good photo, but only to the people who understands it I guess... |

Fayepek,
I gave you a "5" on this one. The sharpness was excellent. I like the way the water rippled. Unfortunately, you can't really make out the fishes. This is good for them ,but bad for photographers. The stone on the bottom is what attracted my eyes.
If it wasn't for the title I actually thought that it was coins in a fountain.
I don't know if your camera can take filters, but a circular polarizer filter should help your lens cut down on reflections. You can then get a shot through the water and be able to see the fish.
Hope this helps.

About 50 people just didn't get it; out of ignorance or whatever. The comments you got show that the voters who understood what it was liked it. I didn't vote on it but think I would have given it a 6 or 7, but that's after reading your explaination. Shake it off, it's a good picture. |

Interesting thing is that the fishes are more noticeable in the thumbnail.

Oh yes, this helps a lot. To me the Salmon is perfectly clear in the water. Faidoi, if you can't make it out it explains a lot. It is one big fish across the top of the photo.
Goubin and Coolhar, thanks for your comments.. Guess I need to keep at least one foot in the box :)

I think the main reasons for the low score were covered in previous replies. The photo is hard to understand with just the short glance which is all many people gave it when voting. And perhaps it requires previous experience with spawning salmon to really appreciate it. I do. This is one of my most favorite images on the site. |

I absolutley love this photo exactly the way it is! Not sure if I see "grace" but it is perfect in every other way. Of course, I'm a fly fishing addict and my dreams look like this photo. Don't worry about your score in the challenge. This is a winner...

It often happens that very good photos go unnoticed, are misunderstood or condemned for faults which lie with the voter and not the photo. Fortunately, for you, you have been spared the worst with this image and evoked some articulate appreciation.
I'd have like to see it beat out quite a few competing images with no more than aesthetics to go bat for them. This one teaches and inspires as well. The score you received, to me, reflects the critical quality of available voters rather than the merits of the your capture.
Chin up, faye, eye to the wind. ;-)

Faye I gave you a 7 and toward the top of the pack for me.
I find it gets real hard to rate all the real good photos one against the other when voting.
So what I do is give what I think is the best 8, 9, 10̢۪
What I think is very high quality 6, 7̢۪s. Average 5. Below average 3, 4̢۪s and almost never 1, 2̢۪s.
For me you could have won the Challenge, so I scored you a 7 which I feel is an average score for the winner.
I might be lenient on my scoring but I feel the average on this site is above 5 and closer to 6.
Then again I̢۪m new to this and I could be all wrong????
At least I feel I do not bring down what could possibly be the best. But what I like the best gets my highest scores.
That̢۪s my story and I̢۪m sticking to it.
That was a great shot!

Hi fayepek
I missed this one somewhere along the vote in Grace.
But I find it an intriguing and thought provoking image - added to my favourites.
The colour, effect and message with your detailed description are quite powerful. The only thing IMO that I would have done is cropped the shiny stones off the bottom, because of them my eye keeps falling off the main subject - that wonderful fish.
