Is it me or are we just seeing more and more of the same ol' shots over and over? Does originality count for anything anymore?

Originality in meeting a challenge is ALWAYS good for bonus points when I score a shot!!!

I think it is because if photographers try something that doesn't fit the mold their photo gets voted down. Most of my photos are somewhat "outside the box" but to me getting that creative shot is more important than scores.
My Grace entry was different.. didn't fit the mold (but two people added it to their favorite photos) and it didn't even score as average.
I think you just have to decide what is most important... I choose creativity.

Is it my imagination or do some people shoot the same thing over and over again and try to make it fit into the present challenge. I notice one person keeps shooting tools, one shoots chess pieces and another keeps shooting colored glass. |

i am personally a bit tired of flower and bug macros, water drops, and kittens. but maybe that's just me.
lately it seems that getting all the way through the end of voting for a challenge is the hardest part of participating on this site. |

It could be that those items are the more commonly photographed items that fits (or not) into a challenge. A lot of photographers find a niche and stay with it. You also have some people who see what someone else did and having not done that before try a similar shot in order to learn the technique. There are also the tried and tested shots that do well on DPC, which some people call 'stock photographs', and I'm sure some people shoot those hoping to win. You will also find it difficult to get 250 original images all based on the same theme. Of course there will be repetition when they are all based on X definition.
Originality is not really with the person who creates but with the person who views. A new photographer to DPC may never have seen Setz's Liberty and Justice or the technique involved and be simply amazed at the originality of it. Those of us who have been around here a while know of it and the technique and think it's the same old same old. Setz's shot was not even original, he copied the technique from a magazine, but at the time of the challenge it was original enough to a lot of people that it scored well.
Yes, we want 250 original images every week, yes it can get boring to see badly composed pet pictures, but DPC continually receives new members who, understandably, are trying out new techniques, styles, and images to them. If you look around any contest site or critique site you will see a lot of the same old, landscape shots, water reflections, flowers, etc etc. The difference here is that most people vote on the whole 250 of them instead of glancing through thumbnails and picking out maybe 1-5 favorites and thinking 'wow, so pretty, cool, original'.
Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

Why yes it does, it counts for lower scores most of the time, just ask my still life entry which is going down with every vote. Oh well, when you see which is mine I hope you'll understand why I'm so proud of it regardless of what the voters say! ;)
