Congrats to the ribbon winners in the Grace Challenge.

Because I'm looking at buying a Sony DSC-F717, I like to check out how that camera went in each Challenge.

In Grace:

1st: Sony DSC-F717
2nd: Sony DSC-F707
3rd: Sony DSC-F717
4th: Sony DSC-F707

Hmm, now, why did I want a F717 again? :)

Well done all!

So much proof that you don't need 5000 $ equipment and 10 Lbs bag to take nice photo :-)
It's not the camera...

Hmmm... if I hadn't just spent $650 on Photoshop CS I could run out and get me a Sony.

But seriously folks, congrats to Ornis, willem, brianlr and dsidwell.

I have actually noticed that some of the best entries are shot with Sony DSC cameras. I am looking into buying a camera for my son (or giving my son mine and getting myself something new).

Is the Sony DSC series worth considering? Price wise for quality?

Can enyone enlighten me, please...

I am one of those Sony users in the top 4, in my case an "old" F707. I am very happy with the camera since it offers a lot of control.

At the same time, I am sure that these results can be achieved with any modern camera. If it has good optics, enough megapixels (to allow crop), and manual controls, you should be able to get it with the Minolta's, Nikons, Canons etc. as well.

I would guess the reason why the F7x7 do well is because the people using them have bought them because of the possibilities they offer, because they are serious about photography, and want to do something extra to get good pictures, and want to be in control. I know I did.

After all it is not the camera that MAKES the picture, it just records it.

Hi Nella,

this camera is a dream to start with:

Sony DSC-V1

I saw it this weekend and wow... I was gonna buy it even if I recently got a DSC-U30 (good as a toy can be, but ultra-portable) and I have the F707.

It remembers me my very first camera, more than 30 years ago.
It looked identical even if, of course, was not a digital one.

Apart from look and feels, the features and body of the V1 are sensational. Definitely a little jewel.

Quite right. The optics in use by Sony are produced by Carl Zeiss - these optics are of extremley high quality used for Hassalblad cameras etc.

Well, I think it's more a statistic - look at how many people are shooting Sony 7s and EOS10Ds... Chances are, one of them is going to win, statistically, speaking.

PS7 - $75 student discount (can't remember where though - online somewhere).

Actually the 3rd place guy was using his F707, and still thinks it's a great camera despite the major exodus to the Canon family. Although, he's more than a little bit tempted by the 828!

That is not coincidence. It´s statistical science showing your worth. You had viewed that so many users in DPC had a Sony? No other brand has so many. May I had mistaked with this calculation, but...

From what I've read I think it is more likely that the optics in Sony digicams are designed by Carl Zeiss and made by Sony or a third party. I doubt that the Zeiss firm is involved in mass producing lens systems in the price range Sony sells. They are more of a high end and speciality manufacturer. And have a reputation for the highest quality in optics. I'm sure that Sony is glad to be able to put the Zeiss name on their products.

As you can see in this info (and then click on technical data) from Carl Zeiss the lens is produced by Carl Zeiss for Sony.

Note that the new announced F828 also has the T* coating.

I am not an expert, but it is supposed to be even better.
