This past weekend I was hired by a local collage to shoot some ski races. On Saturday I was at Smugglers Notch in Vermont, the weather was the worst I have ever shot in. Now please understand I have shot in cold weather for almost 15 years, snow 15 years, skiing 10 years. This was the worst ever. It was 0 degrees outside, 45-50 mph crosswind and snowing like hell. The gate I was shooting was 30 feet from me. I gor frostbite on my nose, and my shutter froze up only after about three hours into the event. I think that is really good for an electronic shutter. The snow was blowing so hard it got into places in the camera I didn't even know exsisted. However, once the camera was out of direct wind it took about 10 min before it was up and running again. God I love Nikon, their cameras have never let me down. I can't say enough about the D200 and how it performs in extreme conditions. Any lesser camera would not have been able to handle the weather. So show us your most extreme shot, speaking about the weather conditions of course. Here is just one of the shots from the race. I'm still working on processing the others, this one is straight from the camera.

I take it you had to manually focus that shot? I don't know how anybody could race in that weather. |

The way I set up was to prefocus on the gate and time my shots. As for skiing, well, about 1/4 of the entries DNF on the first 5 gates. I skied to where I was shooting but I couldn't see the details in the snow so trying to find a safe path down with all my gear on my back was a PAIN. |
