This is a question I've come across a number of times and I'm hoping someone knows how to do it...

Replace color (PS) works great for actual colors, but I often want to replace a greyscale "color" like black with an actual color (I'm sure there's terminology for an actual color, but hopefully you know what I mean). Replace color only gives me hue/saturation/lightness, which allows me to turn black to grey, but not black to red.

Does anyone know of a way to turn a greyscale into an actual color?

Are you looking to alter the color of the entire photo or just one specific gray shade within it?

Are you talking about selective desaturation? For this you start with a colour image.

Yes, I'm looking to alter just one grey shade... exactly like replace color, but the color I'm trying to replace is grey or black.

(not selective desat)

Since everything in grayscale all in the same color range, the only thing I can think of is to hand-select the area you want to change, then airbrush or some tool along those lines. Maybe Select -> Color Range -> Highlights or Shadows if it's really high contrast.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I've had some luck with the color replace brush tool, but it's not as exact.

A lot depends if the object you want to change is the only object of that shade in the image.

A possible workaround (in Photoshop) would be to make the image a true grayscale, then a duotone. In duotone mode you can probably change the black area to the second color. Then convert that back to RGB and try your standard replace color technique.
