after seeing photos like this (example: //www.deviantart.com/deviation/21808059/?qo=26&q=by%3Ayv&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps and this: //www.deviantart.com/deviation/29392833/) I am sort of wondering: Is there a good place to learn how to make nifty manipulations like this or is it a lot of trial and error, learn as you go stuff?
One one hand I would like to learn how to manipulate photos? And on the other I'd like to keep my pics pure.
Anyone have an opinion on this? Or can reccommend some learning sites?

They are beautiful. I think it is purely up to you...what you want to achieve. Try many styles before you make assumptions though as quite often you could be in for some surprises.

The second link doesn't seem to work. The first one is nice but pretty basic in terms of manipulations. You'll want to search on "photoshop blending modes" and "photoshop textures" in google.

i am trying to learn from it, but it seems like thats kind of the direction i want to take a couple photos so its all good.

if you are into that, this is a close friend of mine. he is fonominal at doing what you are looking for. check his stuff out and if you are interested talk to me and I'll help with whatever I can.
