I just noticed this. My 300D enters the following specs when I hit the "Front Image" button in PS7: W: 17.067, H: 11.378, Res: 180

I'm happy with those sizes, I save them as TIFFs if I edit them, and they seem to rescale to 300 DPI print images without any trouble. I expected my new 30D to have a similar defualt, but it has it's own: W: 48.667, H: 32.444, Res: 72

It's the final one that really worries me, the 72 DPI resolution. That doesn't seem enough if I later wanted to upscale it to 300 DPI without issues. My 30D is set to Large, Fine JPEG.

So is this normal and I'm just a goof for getting worried about it, or am I misunderstanding the whole DPI alteration process somehow. Ideally, is there a setting in-camera that will alter the DPI and size settings?

DPI means nothing. It's total pixel resolution that is important.

300D at 300 DPI = 10.2 x 6.8

30D at 300 DPI = 11.6 x 7.7

Like stranghost said, it's all about total pixel resolution.
