Hello everybody,
after one week of not taking any pictures, I took my Canon EOS today and was trying to take some pics, but my autofocus would not work, whatever i tried.
I tried all my 3 lenses, which worked last week.
I reset the entire camera.
I can not get the camera to focus, period.
anybody any ideas?
Just wanted some feedback before i have to take it to the store and deal with those sales people (no offense)
thank you |

I`m no expert, but it sounds like the camera and lenses are not communicating with each other. There must be some kind of issue with the "connector/docking ring" on the camera.
Sounds like you may have to have someone (i.e. Canon repair techies) have a look at it.
Good luck. |

I had this problem with my rebel. The autofocus motor was busted and I had to get it repaired from Canon. |

Wouldn't that result in an Err99?

I had the same problem a few days ago with a particular lens. I remembered reading somewhere that you could use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts on the lens and also on the camera, and it worked... I just 'erased' the gold contacts very lightly on both items, taking care to hold the camera pointing downward so that debris didn't fall in.
**Disclaimer** I'm not a repair tech... try at your own peril! (But it worked for me!) -Ray |

Put a lens on manual focus and shoot some pictures. Are you able to? Are they "normal" appearing? Everything seem to be working? If so, the lenses are communicating with the camera.
In fact, you might check just to be sure all your lenses aren't already switched to MF for some reason; that would be the most obvious reason focus doesn't want to work :-)

Don't be so quick. Even the EOS manuals state that dirty contacts will cause autofocus failures, and I've experienced it myself. The camera works fine in all other aspects - just cleaning the contacts fixes the issue. |

<--- Mechanic and we use pencil erasers on door jamb contacts for vans and in rare cases custom installs that use two peice door jamb contacts. Also as a kid we had special china erasers for cleanign the contacts on them TYCO electric car tracks and train tracks. |

Well then, I'll defer to the manual :-) I would have thought contact problems would tend to affect all the electronic functions at once...

Well it depends im assuming it probly uses a digital bus to communicate then yeah okay one or two pins will stop all functions. But an older analog design that has 1 or 2 grounds then several positives, then one positive terminal getting dirty might only stop one function. Im assuimg the 20D uses a digital bus for CPU tpye lenses and yeah typically all functions go bye bye. |

I believe they're digital, but there are several different contacts, and I think that each one is used for different functions.
The failure can be complete, or in some cases, sporadic. |

you hadn't been manually focusing with the lens set to AF had you?
i would think that dirty contacts would give you the err99 message.

I upgraded to 30D. XTI felt and looked too much like a toy. |

I'm confused. The autofocus motor? The motor is in the lens, not the body... was it a lens problem? |

Glad you got yourself an answer. I would wait until the big show in February before making a decision. Regardless though, the only real big selling point for the 400D that people seem to be feeling that it's better than the 30D is the dust removal thingy. I wouldn't really sweat it too much personally. I think there's a DPP upgrade that allows you to do this in the RAW processing as well, so hardly an issue worth worrying about.
I've been happy with my 30D and am still confident that it's a better cam than the 400XTI.
If there is a 40D coming out in February, it might be worth it to you to wait a month after it comes out (for pricing) (or alternatively, watch Dell's website early on for some super deals if you live in America) and pick one up.
The only real differences will likely be a slightly faster read/write speed to the card, 10 megapixels, bigger buffer, dust protection and some other minor stuff. |
